Today, Disney+ released an exciting special look and unveiled a brand-new poster and images for the highly anticipated second season of Lucasfilm’s Emmy®-nominated thriller “Andor,” which returns for its long-awaited conclusion on April 23. The special look offers a glimpse at the making of Season 2 of the compelling series, in which the characters and their relationships will intensify as the horizon of war draws near and Cassian becomes a key player in the Rebel Alliance. Everyone will be tested and, as the stakes rise, the betrayals, sacrifices and conflicting agendas will become profound.

Rife with political intrigue, danger, tension, and high stakes, the series is a prequel to “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, which portrayed a heroic band of rebels who steal the plans to the Empire’s weapon of mass destruction: The Death Star, setting the stage for the events of the original 1977 film. “Andor” sets the clock back five years from the events of “Rogue One” to tell the story of the film’s hero, Cassian Andor, and his transformation from disinterested, cynical nobody into a rebel hero on his way to an epic destiny.

The final season will unfold over 12 episodes broken down into four chapters of three episodes each. The first chapter will premiere April 23, with subsequent chapters debuting each week.

“Andor” Season 2 stars Diego Luna, Stellan Skarsgård, Genevieve O’Reilly, Denise Gough, Kyle Soller, Adria Arjona, Faye Marsay, Varada Sethu, Elizabeth Dulau, Alan Tudyk, with Ben Mendelsohn and Forest Whitaker. The series was created by Tony Gilroy, who also serves as an executive producer along with Kathleen Kennedy, Sanne Wohlenberg, Diego Luna, Luke Hull and John Gilroy. Tony Gilroy wrote the first three episodes, with Beau Willimon writing episodes 4-6, Dan Gilroy penning episodes 7-9 and Tom Bissell putting pen to paper for episodes 10-12. The directors for the series are Ariel Kleiman (Eps. 1-6), Janus Metz (Eps. 7-9) and Alonso Ruizpalacios (Eps. 10-12).

Three-Minute Epics: A Look at Star Wars: Clone Wars

Genesis and Inspiration

Episode II set the stage with the furious Battle of Geonosis that first pit Jedi-led clone troopers against the seemingly endless ranks of Separatist battle droids. As explosive as that incredible sequence was, it only served to whet the Clone War-appetites of Star Wars fans. Episode III is still years away, but the next engagements of the Clone Wars will come soon enough, on the small screen, in animated episodes that may be short on running time, but are nonetheless large in scope and downright huge in talent. As announced today, Star Wars: Clone Wars is coming to the Cartoon Network this fall.

Leading the war effort is Genndy Tartakovsky, the acclaimed creator of “Samurai Jack” and “Dexter’s Laboratory” for the Cartoon Network. When executives at the Cartoon Network began exploring the possibilities of animated Star Wars adventures, Tartakovsky’s name was at the top of the list of desired talent.

“I was contacted because I’ve always been very vocal that I’m a Star Wars fan and would love to work on it,” says Tartakovsky. “So, the Cartoon Network came up to me and asked me to put a little pitch together. We came up with this idea of doing a Clone Wars-style story with a Band of Brothers-feel to it — where it’s episodes of different battles and strategies during the Clone Wars. We went up to Lucasfilm and pitched it, and everyone enjoyed it, and it just came together.”

The end result will be 20 animated shorts of two-to-three-minutes running time each, telling one continuous story of the Clone Wars, as well as side stories that branch from the main. “A little bit of the story changed here and there since the pitch, but it’s pretty much the same,” says Tartakovsky. “Anakin and Obi-Wan are on Muunilinst, and they’re taking out these factories that the Federation has built. And in our side stories, we have Kit Fisto, another with Mace, another with Yoda and Padmé.”

Tartakovsky is heading up a lean, mean crew of animators, designers and artists, mostly made up of familiar faces from “Samurai Jack,” however that doesn’t mean Star Wars fans will just get “Jack” episodes with lightsabers added. “I didn’t want to do exactly what we did with ‘Samurai Jack.’ One of the guys I’ve been working with the longest time, Paul Rudish, is a huge Star Wars fan. We went with his style, which blends Star Wars with the way we both draw. He designed the look of the characters, based on what the actors look like, but eventually it changes into its own thing. It still retains the feeling of the actors; it has their essence, but it doesn’t look exactly like them.”

Since “Samurai Jack” debuted in 2001, critics and animation buffs have lauded its deft mixture of minimalism and spectacle, and its cinematic scope that evokes feelings of a Kurosawa epic – definitely a far cry from what television animation was just a few years ago. Tartakovsky promises similar attention to detail with Star Wars: Clone Wars. “It’s going to be very high quality,” he says. “It’ll be like little mini-features, because everything is really hand-crafted and we’re really taking our time with everything because we respect Star Wars so much.”

As inspiration, Tartakovsky turned to his library of World War II films. “I’m a big World War II buff, so I looked at a lot of old footage and old movies, like The Longest Day. When doing battle scenes, it was almost a second language to us. I was a big fan of Band of Brothers, and thought that the fighting there was executed really well. Black Hawk Down was another well executed war film. I mean, it’s still going to be robots and droids that get killed in battle, but there will be a few hardcore things. It’s not going to be too gritty,” he says with a smile.

Case in point, for all the cinematic drama of “Samurai Jack,” the show is also quite funny. The three-minute Clone Wars shorts will still pack fun into their brief action-filled running times. “There’s definite visual jokes. For example, we have one where the Republic ARC Troopers are blowing up a cannon, and instead of putting one piece of demolition on it, it’s absolutely lined with bombs. So, it’s kind of absurd and funny, since it wouldn’t really happen like that, but it’s still cool. There are little, subtle things like that.”

This marks the first time Tartakovsky has ever worked on a licensed property. Dexter and Jack were his creations, giving him absolute freedom in crafting their characters. With Star Wars, Tartakovsky has to adhere to the precedent of the Star Wars films, as well as the creative guidance of Lucasfilm — something he notes is going smoothly.

“Ever since I got into animation, I’ve been working with characters that I created or helped create. Now, this is working with somebody else’s character. So, when Anakin’s talking we ask, ‘Well… would he say that?’ And I respond, ‘I don’t know… it’s not my character!’ With Samurai Jack or Dexter, it’s more intuitive. Here, there’s a lot more discussion about it. Would Yoda say it like this, or would he not do that? We have to talk it out, and we don’t have the absolute authority to say, ‘yes, he would say that.’ That was our first stumbling block, but now we’re a lot more comfortable with it,” he says.

“The great thing is George Lucas is a fan of ‘Samurai Jack,'” Tartakovsky notes, “So he said, ‘let them do their job without being too involved.’ I think this is great because we don’t have to copy exactly what the live action is, and we can take Star Wars and interpret it and animate it in our style.”

Dressing The Galaxy: The Look Of Andor‘s Costumes

Here’s the latest from: StarWars.Com

Syril Karn’s pristine Pre-Mor uniform — complete with “pockets, piping, and some light tailoring” — is more than a hint at the character’s fussy nature and desire for the kind of order promised by the Empire. It’s also one of costume designer Michael Wilkinson’s favorite scenes in the series’ premiere episode, “Kassa.”

“I love that scene. Those two actors are so fantastic. And if I may say so, the costumes tell you quite a lot in that scene,” Wilkinson tells StarWars.com. “You have the precision and fastidiousness of Syril Karn’s uniform that he has personalized, customized, and made exactly how he wants it to be. And then his boss, on the other hand, is wearing a uniform that’s crumpled and dirty and has a couple of stains down the front of his shirt and a jacket he shrugs on that he’s had for 20 years.”

The two variations are among hundreds of costumes that Wilkinson and his team designed and fabricated for the actors on Andor, with all 12 episodes in Season 1 now streaming on Disney+. “I really enjoy playing with the language of clothes,” he says. “We wanted these things to be so rich with meaning and deserve repeated viewings that you could go deeper with it all. And, you know, it’s the only way that I really know how to work, to actually construct these backstories and worlds and civilizations so that everything has meaning. Otherwise, it’s fashion design, not costume design.”

Wilkinson recently sat down to talk about how his work helped telegraph Cassian Andor’s character evolution, the heartbreaking backstory of the costumes on Kenari, and the one item he kept from his time working on the production…

The Mandalorian caused a major shift in Lucasfilm’s Star Wars strategy. No longer were movies its focus—now all eyes were on Disney+. Of course, there was Pedro Pascal’s Mando, with both The Book of Boba Fett and Obi-Wan Kenobi following. Ahsoka and The Acolyte are also on the way. The series stars Jude Law, alongside three other kid actors (Ravi Cabot-Conyers and Kryiana Kratter rumored to be amongst them) and is created by both Jon Watts and Chris Ford. The entire idea of the show was pitched to Jon Favreau by Jon Watts during the production of Spider-Man: No Way Home.

The only plot information known to the wider world is that it will take place around the same timeline as The Mandalorian and follow a group of kids lost in the galaxy, trying to make their way back home.

There’s only been one proper look at the series, which was thanks was a single photo from D23 that didn’t reveal all too much. Now, thanks to a video from the set, fans have a new peek behind the curtain….

Episode I’s chief artist Doug Chiang has taken up where Ralph McQuarrie’s paintbrush left off, and has brought a new look to Star Wars for the new movie. Find out about some of the influences shaping Chiang’s designs in this special interview.

Episode I is fortunate to rely upon a remarkably talented individual for the distinctive new look of its environments, spacecraft, and other elements of design. Artist Doug Chiang has taken up where the great Ralph McQuarrie left off, and has brought a fascinating imprint to Episode I. Chiang’s work includes not only the creation of a huge body of original artwork and designs, but also the supervision of the team of extraordinary conceptual artists brought together in George Lucas’ Episode I Art Department. Beyond this, Chiang works closely with the effects supervisors at ILM and is overseeing the miniature set and model construction to ensure that the Art Department’s work is translated faithfully to the screen. He is as busy now as he was in pre-production, since design is still very much in progress for some of the more elaborate sequences presently being put together.

Taking the helm of the Star Wars Art Department would be a daunting challenge for anyone, but Chiang has risen to the occasion with an appealing mix of fresh artistic style and great respect for those who built the art of Star Wars before him. An interview in Star Wars Insider #39 explores Chiang’s background. Here on http://www.starwars.com, David West Reynolds carries on from that article to explore the influences that Chiang has brought to the look of Episode I.

What kinds of thoughts got you started on the art of Episode I?

When I first started, I didn’t know whether George wanted more of the same designs that we had seen in the earlier trilogy–the kind of work that Ralph McQuarrie and Joe Johnston had produced. So I thought a lot about trying to identify the exact look of Star Wars in Ralph’s work. I wanted to identify his visual style and the qualities that made it distinctly Star Wars, and incorporate that into my own work.

Ralph’s work displays such grandeur with striking imagery, and I wanted to try to capture that. I considered Ralph’s work very closely, and what really struck me was the clarity of design, how well his paintings and ideas read. He has a great sense of fitting bold images into unusual contexts. He present things in unfamiliar contexts, something that George likes very much–the unexpected. This approach adds to the richness and the depth of fantasy world history. In addition, Ralph’s colors are just as striking. His palette is fresh and bold, and sometimes stylized.

Stylized colors? Give me an example of what you mean by that.

[Well, for instance, Ralph’s blues in his Hoth paintings are really strong and vibrant, almost electric blues. Because the paintings work so well, you don’t realize right away that those blues are much more stylized than realistic. They’re powerfully effective at creating mood, and they feel like the actual movie scenes more than they really look like them.

Was this approach something you chose to follow in your paintings?

At first I was very uncomfortable about being so bold in my own work, but since then I have pushed myself into new territory and tried some rich color combinations as well.

In the Star Wars work of Ralph and Joe Johnston, what has been the strongest influence on you?

For me it had always been about functionality when I came up with designs. The design quality was in how well they would work, and how they were built. For George, film design quality is not about details like that, but about how well a design reads to the eye, immediately. Ralph and Joe’s works really express that. They’re very clear and bold in concept, and I have tried to learn that quality.

So has Ralph checked in on you? I notice that you have one of his original paintings on your wall there.

He has come by three times and has been really kind. I think I spend most of my time just trying to live up to his work!

But Episode I is yours! What kinds of influences can we expect to see in your Episode I designs?

George Lucas influences, to start out with! After I had spent all that time studying the Star Wars style, George came in and told me he wanted something as fresh as Ralph’s original work, but different. We’ve been saturated in designs derived from the original Star Wars look for twenty years now, and George wanted something really new. He said, “push the envelope, discover new things.” It was a surprise, but really exciting. He said, “I want chrome, sleek shapes, Art Nouveau, and Art Moderne.” That’s when I realized that this was going to be something new and not just a rework of the earlier material.

How would you describe the look you’ve developed in Episode I?

This film takes place a generation earlier than the classic trilogy, and in it you see vehicles and ships treated as art forms. Many of them are romantic and elegant. It is a craftsman’s era. Every detail is given care. It is kind of like the 1920’s and 1930’s compared to the later 20th century. Towards the later times of the classic trilogy, designs become more assembly-line like, with mass-produced aesthetics, hard angles, and a machined look. More utilitarian. The era of Episode I is more polished, more individualized, even overly-designed, but very refined. You see artistic values expressed in vehicles that are pure craft and aesthetics. Some elements are purely visual statements. Something simpler could function, but the design statements turn them into works of art.

Are there deliberate links between Episode I designs and those seen in the classic trilogy?

Absolutely. There is one ship in particular that very much foreshadows the look of a design from A New Hope, and there are other conceptual links as well.

What’s your toughest challenge in working up these new designs?

There is a fine line between a handcrafted look and a look that is “too sci-fi,” or “too design-ey.” I think that you get that “too sci-fi” look when you use present-day aesthetics and try to project it forward into a foreign world without the history to back it up. As a result these designs date very quickly. To get around this, I’ve found that you should avoid making things up without anchoring them to a strong foundation based in world history.

What areas of world art or history have you drawn on for Episode I?

I took early 1950’s American car design as a starting point for some of the space fighters, for chrome and sleek streamlining. For another culture in the film I drew on traditional African art stylization to get the look of their vehicles, their aesthetic. I combined that with hints of animal forms, and this invested the designs with personality, which is one of the hardest things to do.

What kind of design input do you get from George?

George is always very directly involved. He is a fantastic designer! Sometimes he will make very specific requests while other times he will just ask to see something different and fresh. In fact he will often ask for combinations of forms that, at first, don’t seem to fit together. But that is where George’s design genius lies, in the odd juxtaposition of unrelated images. It took me awhile to adjust to this. But this kind of direction takes the art into new areas, and we have ended up with some of our best designs by wrestling with direction that seemed impossible.

The illustrations for this feature all come from the portfolio that Doug Chiang had put together before he came on board for Episode I. We chose these artworks to demonstrate Doug’s style and range, and in them you see some of the influences that emerged later in Episode I.
