Star Wars Doesn’t Quite Redeem Jar Jar

When it comes to divisive characters in the Star Wars franchise, there are few more divisive than Jar Jar Binks. From his first appearance in Star Wars: Episode I — The Phantom Menace, the well-meaning Gungan was comic relief in the Star Wars universe but was also extremely polarizing for fans and the backlash was so extreme that it even negatively impacted Ahmed Best, who brought the character to life. And, of course, it didn’t help Jar Jar’s case when he ended up being instrumental in Chancellor Palpatine getting vast emergency powers in Star Wars: Episode II — Attack of the Clones because, well, we all knew where that was going.

But over the years the tide has been turning for Jar Jar Binks. People’s perspectives have shifted with time, especially as Star Wars fans who were kids when the prequel series debuted have grown up and now, Jar Jar is even being canonically redeemed thanks to the new Star Wars: Jar Jar #1 comic, revealing his key role in the origin of the Rebel Alliance…

Strongest Jedi Of All Time?

Here’s the latest from The Direct –   STaR wars

Star Wars fans have argued who the strongest Jedi of all time is for many years, but there is really no competition, as one stands high above everyone else. After Return of the Jedi was released in 1983, it was pretty clear to fans that Luke Skywalker was undoubtedly the strongest Jedi to have ever lived, as he defeated the Sith and did something no other Jedi had ever been able to do. However, the prequel trilogy then showed just how powerful Luke’s father, Anakin, was, so fans of that trilogy then began arguing that Anakin was much stronger than Luke.

While the debate has gone on for a long time, there is a clear winner, but it actually depends on whether fans are talking strictly about canon or if Star Wars Legends (which was formerly known as the Expanded Universe (EU)) is involved. If canon is the only timeline and reference being looked at, Anakin Skywalker is absolutely the most powerful Jedi of all time. However, if the EU is being taken into consideration, then it is undoubtedly Luke…

The Story of R1-G4

Here’s the latest from Rancho Obi-Wan

This is the story of the R1-G4 hand-crafted, prototype figure created in late 1977, because Kenner was working on expanding their new toy line from 12 Star Wars action figure to 20. And, they were looking primarily at two categories: cantina aliens and droids.

One Kenner designer hand-crafted a prototype figure intending to depict a droid seen outside the sandcrawler as Luke and Uncle Owen purchase R2-D2 and C-3PO from the Jawas in Star Wars…

A Trip to England, Random Stop and…

Here’s the latest from Rancho Obi-Wan

Let’s take a look back to the 80’s of a story about how a trip to England, and a random stop at a petrol station, led to the discovery Star Wars “Star-Badges” and quest to complete the collection!

In the early part of 1989 I was traveling around England. Our coach pulled into a petrol station in the little town of Moreton-in-Marsh to refuel and all the passengers disembarked to stretch their legs and stock-up on snacks for the road. At the checkout counter, I happened to notice a familiar sight: the Star Wars logo. Being the late-eighties, it was not a common image to see in a retail setting since it had been several years since the last movie and there was no expectation of any new material anytime soon from that galaxy far, far away. Always on the lookout for Star Wars merchandise, I made my way up to the counter and discovered a wire rack display with an arched cardboard backdrop touting the famous logo in red and surrounded by a semi-circle of six metal buttons (badges as they are called in the United Kingdom) featuring art of Star Wars characters and ships. These weren’t just any badges, they were “Star-Badges!”…

Why Lucasfilm’s Succession Plans Honor the Company’s Legacy

After years of speculation, Kathleen Kennedy has officially stepped down as President of Lucasfilm and handed over the reins to new Co-Presidents Dave Filoni and Lynwen Brennan. For those attuned to the Force, this news wasn’t shocking, although it has raised concerns among some fans about the future of a galaxy far, far away. Despite the inevitable backlash to Filoni’s hiring customary to a fan base no stranger to toxicity, we think Lucasfilm’s succession plan is not only the logical one, but the most promising one – a plan that will put Star Wars into hyperdrive by simultaneously honoring the past and charting star systems never before seen.

Over the last decade, the very mention of Dave Filoni’s name has become disparagingly synonymous with a certain flavor of Star Wars storytelling. One only has to scroll absent-mindedly through Star Wars Twitter/X to see users poke fun at a predicted future for the franchise involving wild cameos, an over-reliance on nostalgia, projects that require a deep knowledge of Star Wars lore as a prerequisite for viewing, and lots and lots of Ahsoka Tano. All of these jabs woefully simplify Filoni’s contributions to Star Wars and overlook his genuine craft as a storyteller and filmmaker…
