Steve Purcell, the Eisner Award-winning artist, talks about creating an illustrated homage to the Star Wars series that connects back to two other key moments in his career.

Since its earliest iterations, the story of Star Wars: Skeleton Crew has been tied to another Lucasfilm pirate adventure: the Monkey Island games from LucasArts.
Series creators Jon Watts and Chris Ford count The Secret of Monkey Island from 1990 among their childhood inspirations for the story of Captain Silvo and his brigand crew, and among their own behind-the-scenes crew, Skywalker Sound’s Matt Wood and David W. Collins worked on the beloved gaming franchise. “Monkey Island was a huge thing for me as a kid,” Watts tells StarWars.com. “I loved Monkey Island, and still do, and so getting to do space pirates was something that allowed me to check back in.”
“During the press junket, Monkey Island came up a lot,” adds Ford, “and we talked about how much we loved the artwork from that era of LucasArts.” That gave the team an idea for promoting their series in a way that would bring their inspiration full circle. “I think it was Jon who actually thought ‘Hey, maybe we could ask someone at Lucasfilm if they actually know [Monkey Island cover artist] Steve Purcell and maybe he could do some art for Skeleton Crew?’” Ford recalls…

For Jon Watts, dreaming of big adventures is nothing new. “As a kid, I grew up in Colorado in the middle of nowhere, and we’d just go for walks out in these fields with nothing around,” he says. He’d pass the time imagining exploits for himself that stretched beyond his home state — not unlike the adventure he and series co-creator Chris Ford created together in Star Wars: Skeleton Crew.
Now with all episodes streaming on Disney+, StarWars.com is shining a spotlight on the directors of all eight episodes to learn more about their own Star Wars journeys and the unique storytelling each one brought to their Skeleton Crew chapter….
In the finale, the children must convince their parents to fight back against the pirate threat.

At Attin may look the same as when Wim (Ravi Cabot-Conyers), Fern (Ryan Kiera Armstrong), KB (Kyriana Kratter), and Neel (Robert Timothy Smith) left it, but it certainly feels different after their adventure. Although they are finally back home and reunited with their families, Jod (Jude Law) and his pirate crew threaten all they have fought so hard to return to.
The great and powerful Supervisor we’ve heard so much about has granted an audience with Jod, Fern, and Fara. And he is…not what we expected. A massive droid with one unblinking receptor eye, the Supervisor has been watching over the people of At Attin for many years.
The Supervisor has shepherded his people, providing safety and security. But with the stab of a well-placed lightsaber, the Supervisor, his legion of Safety droids, and the entire power grid are all deactivated, leaving the planet defenseless against Jod and his invading crew….
We’re diving deep into Episode 8, “The Real Good Guys,” and breaking down all the twists, turns, and surprises this finale had in store. How many of our questions got answered? Is Jod a Jedi? Who is The Supervisor? And what about the mysteries of At Attin and the “Jewels of The Republic” But that’s not all, we also look back on the entire season to discuss its biggest moments, standout characters, and how it fits into the larger STAR WARS mythos. Did SKELETON CREW deliver on its potential? What’s next for these characters and the creators? We breakdown the season finale along with your thoughts, theories, and favorite moments from SKELETON CREW and send the season off with a bang!
In the penultimate episode, the pirates and the children brave a maelstrom on their quest for At Attin.
By StarWars.com Team
The ship is the key.
The Onyx Cinder is no ordinary ship. First mistaken for a Jedi temple, then revealed to be a pirate vessel, the crew has now learned the ship is from their home world of At Attin, and the key to getting them safely through the Barrier surrounding their planet. But with Jod and the pirates closing in, this isn’t exactly the homecoming our heroes expected…
Wim (Ravi Cabot-Conyers), Fern (Ryan Kiera Armstrong), KB (Kyriana Kratter), and Neel’s (Robert Timothy Smith) parents execute their plan to send a message beyond At Attin’s Barrier in the hopes of helping their children return safely home….

If you’re not crying over KB and Wim this week, we are not the same.
By StarWars.com Team
Remember when KB (Kyriana Kratter) seemed hesitant to go down into the steamy underbelly of the spa because her augs might get corroded? Well…
This week, things go from bad to worse for KB and the rest of the gang, who find themselves stranded and alone after Jod’s shocking betrayal. With the whole crew pushed to their limits, Fern (Ryan Kiera Armstrong), Wim (Ravi Cabot-Conyers), Neel (Robert Timothy Smith), and KB have to dig deep to find their way back to their ship….
It turns out we all have a lot to learn about pirates in the galaxy far, far away, especially after this latest episode. From hot springs mud baths to hidden treasure including at least one lightsaber, a lot happens, and not everything or everyone is what they appear to be. So join us as share our thoughts, theories and questions with an open switchboard to hear what YOU think!
Supervising sound editor Matthew Wood and sound designer David W. Collins take you on a tour of their latest soundscape.
By Brandon Wainerdi
The familiar chime of the Star Tours interstellar spaceline, the wet squelching of a Hutt luxuriating in a mud bath, and the ferocious snarl of the wolf-like Captain Brutus are just some of the (occasionally disgusting) sounds featured in Star Wars: Skeleton Crew. These intricate details were all meticulously engineered by a team of audiophiles at Skywalker Sound, led by supervising sound editor Matthew Wood and sound designer David W. Collins.
Both long-standing stewards of the soundscapes of the saga, Wood and Collins recently sat down with StarWars.com to take a sonically spoiler-filled look at the first half of the Skeleton Crew journey — a bounty of Easter eggs, behind-the-scenes tidbits, and more….
Our opinion on Jod Na Nawood (Jude Law) is about as easy to pin down as the man himself (and it’s not just because he has more aliases than Ezra Bridger). One minute it seems like the gruff exterior is just a façade, the next he’s literally holding a dagger to a kid’s throat. But we suppose it’s a helpful lesson for Captain Fern (Ryan Kiera Armstrong) and her crew: it’s probably best to sleep with one eye open while Na Nawood is around.
Our crew has just learned that the bucket of bolts that carried them away from At Attin is none other than the storied Onyx Cinder, the vessel once owned by dread pirate Captain Tak Rennod. Jod is thrilled to discover they’re on the legendary pirate captain’s old ship, but the journey has started to take its toll on the rest of the group — especially Wim (Ravi Cabot-Conyers). He just wants to get home! SM-33 reveals he doesn’t remember At Attin’s location, but Captain Rennod kept a record of the coordinates at his secret lair beneath Skull Ridge Mountain and Fern orders him to take them there….
We’re unpacking Episode 4, “Can’t Say I Remember No At Attin.” The crew of the Onyx Cinder has made it home, or have they? Wim, Fern, KB, Neel, Zod, and SM-33 find themselves in the middle of a conflict in a place that seems like At Attin, yet it’s vastly different. With live phone calls bringing your thoughts, theories, and questions, we explore the latest twists and turns of STAR WARS: SKELETON CREW.
Learn more about SM-33 and Neel from Legacy Effects’ co-founder J. Alan Scott.
By Kelly Knox
They say it takes a village to raise a child. When it comes to Neel of At Attin, that old adage couldn’t be more accurate. It took the latest technology, a veteran special effects squad, an entire team of incredible performers, and one very dedicated young actor. But would you have ever guessed that the timeless proverb applies to droids as well?
Star Wars: Skeleton Crew, which recently debuted on Disney+, introduces a slew of brand-new characters who have already earned legions of fans. (Neel Nation, we see you.) “For Skeleton Crew there were more characters than we’ve built on any other season before,” says Legacy Effects co-founder J. Alan Scott, whose company fabricated Grogu for The Mandalorian and brought Professor Huyang and Murley the Loth-cat to life for Ahsoka among others. For the latest series, Legacy Effects once again made a mix of never-before-seen creatures and droids crafted by Doug Chiang and his production design team, like Neel and the unforgettable Kh’ymm, as well as more familiar aliens first glimpsed in other much-loved Star Wars stories. …
Neel takes center stage this week as our travelers reach their destination and find a world that bears strange similarities to their own.
By StarWars.com Team
We’ve loved Neel (Robert Timothy Smith) from the first moment we laid eyes on that carefully combed blue hair and his adorable snout. But this week our adoration was cemented by his kindness and bravery in the face of life-threatening dangers.
Using the coordinates from Kh’ymm’s observatory, our crew travels to a planet that looks much like At Attin, but reveals itself to be a far different kind of place. Neel, KB (Kyriana Kratter), Fern (Ryan Kiera Armstrong), and Wim (Ravi Cabot-Conyers) quickly realize that though many things about this planet look familiar, the world of At Achrann is in a constant state of war. The air is filled with ashy smoke, so thick Jod can taste it when he steps outside. Buildings are bombed-out shells with trees growing through them, evidence of a conflict that’s been raging for a very long time. The kids leave Jod (Jude Law) with the ship and go in search of directions. They soon meet Hayna, a capable young warrior from the Troik clan and the daughter of its leader, General Strix….

In the latest installment, Jod and the children make their escape and find an old friend on a distant moon
By StarWars.com Team
Jod Na Nawood (Jude Law) is proving himself to be quite useful, if rather un-Jedi-like in his methods. That’s probably because, at least according to one former colleague, he’s actually the pirate Captain Silvo. Or is he Crimson Jack?
Fern (Ryan Kiera Armstrong), Wim (Ravi Cabot-Conyers), KB (Kyriana Kratter), and Neel (Robert Timothy Smith) will have to untangle who they can really trust before it’s too late. But an Observatory Moon provides some clues to get them back home and help them find an ally in the wider galaxy….
An interesting Easter egg was spotted in Episode 2 of SKELETON CREW (“Way, Way Out Past The Barrier”). The original-but-scrapped concept design for The Millennium Falcon can be seen at the pirate port of Borga. We discuss the background of the design and why it was never used until now.

Shouldn’t Star Wars be, like, you know, for kids? That’s clearly the assumption behind the latest Disney spin-off, which differs from most of the other offshoots in aiming squarely at the very, very little ones. ‘Isn’t it wizard!?’ exclaims one of the moppets featured in Star Wars; Skeleton Crew, the first two episodes of which have just dropped on the Disney+ streamer worldwide. Hopefully this will be a wizard experience for nippers, but aiming low was what brought the hallowed text of Star Wars to the lows of the Ewoks and The Phantom Menace, so anyone aged over double figures will want to tread carefully…..
