Phantom at 25 | Iain McCaig Talks Darth Maul
Concept and storyboard artist Iain McCaig was among the first to join Episode I’s art department and played a central role in designing many iconic characters.
In 1995, Star Wars: The Phantom Menace (1999) was still two years from starting principal photography and four years from release, but Lucasfilm’s art department at Skywalker Ranch was well underway creating designs and concepts for the innumerable characters, locations, and vehicles in the film. This included a new villain: Darth Maul.
“George [Lucas] just came up and said, ‘Darth Maul, he’s our new Sith Lord,’ and he walked away,” recalls artist Iain McCaig, who by that point had been working primarily on hero characters. “I didn’t know if Maul was male or female, an alien, anything. It freaked me out at the beginning that I didn’t get much direction. Then I realized that maybe he picked me because he liked my work and wanted me to show him what I thought a Darth Maul might look like. George clearly enjoys reacting to visuals. One of his many skills is that he can look at fifty things, make choices, move things around, take a head from this character and put it on the body of that one over there, and suddenly, it’s Star Wars. We learned to trust him and also to trust ourselves.”…
Ben Burtt Talks Sound Design and Picture Editing with George Lucas
Lucasfilm’s first sound designer wore multiple hats on The Phantom Menace and played a central role in crafting the first Star Wars prequel.
By Lucas Seastrom
Back in 1975, Ben Burtt had been hired as the sound designer for Star Wars: A New Hope (1977), becoming one of the first artists of any discipline to work on George Lucas’ space fantasy. Some two decades later, as Lucas began to lay the groundwork for his new prequel trilogy of Star Wars films, Burtt was recruited once again to join the upstart crew.
“I had been working on some project at the Technical Building at Skywalker Ranch,” Burtt tells StarWars.com, “and I got a call from Jane Bay, George’s executive assistant, and she said, ‘Ben, George wants to talk to you about something. Can you come up right now?’ [laughs] I knew that they always started this way.”…

Athena Portillo Talks The Bad Batch
The vice president of Animation Production reflects on her affinity for the more Tech-nical aspects of creating a series.
Kristin Baver
It’s official: Athena Portillo loves Tech just as much as the rest of us.
The vice president of Animation Production for Lucasfilm and executive producer on Star Wars: The Bad Batch has a special affinity for the elite clone we first met in the final season of Star Wars: The Clone Wars. It’s no surprise given the more than a decade she’s spent overseeing the more technical aspects of animation production. “Tech will always be my favorite character,” Portillo tells StarWars.com. “I love everything about him. His wit, his directness, his intelligence, his honesty, and his logic in making the ultimate sacrifice for his brothers and Omega.”…
J.W. Rinzler Talks Star Wars Art: Comics
Welcome to a look Inside The Holocron. A collection of articles from the archives of *starwars.com no longer directly available.

Executive Editor J.W. Rinzler Talks Star Wars Art: Comics
Star Wars Art: Comics, the second in a series from Abrams exploring artwork inspired by the Star Wars saga, reveals the best original artwork from the past three decades of Star Wars comic-book publishing. Lucasfilm Executive Editor J.W. Rinzler, who has worked closely with George Lucas in developing the Star Wars Art book series, offered some insights into Lucas’ affinity for comic book artwork:
First, what inspired Star Wars Art: Comics?
Well, the Star Wars Art series is George’s idea. The first one was Star Wars Art: Visions, and this is the second. In this one, George wanted to highlight the best of Star Wars comic art, including a few new commissioned pieces from top comic book artists, old and new. His main objective was to present this comic book art as fine art.
Lucas maintains a vast collection of movie posters, which one might expect of someone so closely associated with the filmmaking industry. Why has he also decided to collect Star Wars comic artwork?
Well, George, in his youth, read comic books, was interested in comic books, and even launched a comic book to publicize Star Wars, so I think he’s always been interested in comic book art. This is just my opinion, but I think he believes that comic book art and illustrators like Norman Rockwell deserve to be up there with fine artists. He’s very interested in narrative art. He likes it when one image tells a whole story. That’s why we didn’t want to have a lot of dialogue balloons — there are a few because that’s just the way they originally did it — but we wanted it as much as possible to be a silent movie. (Because dialog balloons are now dropped into an image digitally, Star Wars Art: Comics has left those balloons out whenever possible to allow the imagery to speak for itself).
What were you looking for in the artwork you chose for the Star Wars Art: Comics?
George went through his own collection and picked things. He wanted to see stuff that was visually telling a story. Now his collection is mostly from Dark Horse [Comics], so we reached out to collectors for much of the earlier material. Luckily, we were also able to contact Cori Williamson (artist Al Williamson’s wife) and she was able to give us a lot of stuff (the book is actually dedicated to the late Al Williamson).
The book appears to be arranged somewhat chronologically, but not rigidly so. What directed the flow of images?
Abrams pitched us the idea of doing it in story order starting with Episode IV. It is loose, though.
So it’s ordered by episode, not necessarily when the artwork was created?
Right, and then loosely by subject matter within the episodes.
Continuing in the tradition you established for Star Wars Art: Visions, we see several new commissions created by comic artists for this volume. What types of artists were you specifically looking to do these?
George picked out the pieces he liked from his collection, and I submitted several names of comic artists to him that I thought might work well in the book, to which he’d say yes or no. I probably submitted 35 people and got roughly 20 approved. Our mission statement to them was to tell a story visually — not to use any words. For instance, I mentioned to Sam Kieth that George really likes this robot artwork [by Ian Gibson] in which the robot goes “TUP TUP TUP TUP…” So Sam, who’d already created a rancor piece, did a second piece in which the robot goes “PUT PUT PUT PUT…” and we put them face to face.
As the Comics book is the second in a series, what can we expect from the series in the future?
We can’t say what they are just yet, but there will be a third, a fourth, and a fifth, definitely.
Star Wars Art: Comics is available now from Abrams, including a limited edition which includes five signed prints and dozens of additional artworks showcased within the volume itself.

Daisy Ridley Talks ‘The Marsh King’s Daughter’ and Her ‘Star Wars’ Return
Source: Hollywood Reporter – Film
Daisy Ridley has a lot going on these days, but she made a point to carve out some time to support The Marsh King’s Daughter, a film that was a promotional casualty of the now-resolved SAG-AFTRA strike. The English actor has plenty of reasons to be proud of her work in Neil Burger’s thriller, as she’s tasked with playing the psychologically complex and physical role of Helena. As a child, the character lived off the grid with her mother (Caren Pistorius) and father (Ben Mendelsohn) until she was abruptly and dramatically whisked away to lead a more civilized life.
Ridley shares the role with Brooklyn Prince, who plays young Helena in flashbacks. The two actors happened to have a viral moment in 2017, as Prince met Ridley backstage at Good Morning America. Ridley then surprised Prince once more during a The Florida Project Q&A with THR’s Scott Feinberg. And while it was a complete coincidence that the two were playing the same character in Marsh King’s Daughter, Ridley was amazed that they both portrayed Helena in a similar fashion…

SDCC 2023: Julian Gerighty Talks Star Wars Outlaws
The Massive Entertainment creative director shares more about turning the galaxy far, far away into an open world.
It’s not easy for our favorite scoundrels to navigate the Star Wars underworld, but it sure looks like fun. Thankfully, Star Wars Outlaws, the first ever open-world Star Wars game from Massive Entertainment in collaboration with Lucasfilm Games, promises to let players experience all the shady deals, backstabbing, and blaster shootouts for themselves. Coming in 2024 for Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC, Star Wars Outlaws puts fans in the role of Kay Vess, an up-and-comer in the seedy side of the galaxy. Following the game’s announcement in June that revealed a first look at gameplay, a new behind-the-scenes featurette just premiered at San Diego Comic-Con 2023 during a dedicated panel. To mark the occasion, StarWars.com spoke at length with creative director Julian Gerighty, discussing why the team chose the scoundrel archetype for the game, how Kay and her companion Nix will work together, and if there’s more to ND-5’s trench coat…

Michelle Ang Talks Spoilers for The Bad Batch Season 2 Finale
By Kristin Baver
The actor who portrays Omega tells StarWars.com about her character’s emotional journey in the heartbreaking two-episode finale.
Spoiler warning: This article contains plot details from the two-episode Season 2 finale of Star Wars: The Bad Batch, “The Summit” and “Plan 99.”
Plan 99 has been executed, and with it, Omega’s world shattered. But just when it seemed things couldn’t get any worse for Clone Force 99…the Empire arrived on Ord Mantell.
As Season 2 of Star Wars: The Bad Batch came to a poignant end this week, the team was torn apart, with Omega — the emotional center of the squad — trapped at the epicenter of the chaos and kidnapped by Imperial scientists. Behind the scenes, Michelle Ang says the harrowing finale is her favorite episode of the season, a rollercoaster that challenged Omega and the actor behind her, and introduced Ang to two new colleagues — Jimmi Simpson as the nefarious Dr. Royce Hemlock and fellow New Zealander Keisha Castle-Hughes as the mysterious Dr. Emerie Karr. “It’s so gut-wrenching,” Ang tells StarWars.com. “I love the fun missions, don’t get me wrong. But the emotional ones are always the ones that I like to watch best. And also, the ones that I love recording the most.”
Recently, Ang sat down with StarWars.com to discuss her character’s journey in the series so far, and finding the right balance between Omega’s grief and surviving Tech’s haunting sacrifice…

Genevieve O’Reilly Talks Mon Mothma In ‘Andor’
We’ve seen Diego Luna talk plenty about what it’s like returning to the Star Wars galaxy and what audiences can expect from his character, but now Genevieve O’Reilly has spoken at length about her return as Mon Mothma in Andor.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, O’Reilly revealed that she went back and watched Caroline Blakiston’s performance as Mothma after she landed the role in Revenge of the Sith. Whenever she returns to the role (she reprised the role in Rogue One and has also voiced the character in Star Wars Rebels), she studies Blakiston’s performance when she delivers the famous line about the Bothans….

During the interview, he spoke about how long he’s been working on the show, the importance of diversity in Star Wars and roughly how long the first three episodes will be when they arrive on September 21st.
