The veteran sound artist was among the first crew members to work on the Star Wars prequel entry.
The first person to watch the initial assembly of Star Wars: The Phantom Menace (1999) wasn’t director George Lucas. It was then-25-year-old Matthew Wood of Skywalker Sound. As he tells StarWars.com, picture editors Ben Burtt and Paul Martin Smith had spent weeks with Lucas at Skywalker Ranch compiling the first rough version of Episode I. Hours long and far from the refined cut that audiences would see, it was up to Wood to review it and make notes about voices that needed recording.
“Paul and Ben ran out their sequences on video tapes for me,” Wood recalls, “and as I walked into their office, they were all stacked up really high on the table. George Lucas said, ‘Well, here you go, Matt. You’re the first person that’s going to watch the whole movie from beginning to end.’” George was obviously watching everything between the two editing rooms, but they hadn’t screened the movie in its entirety yet. This was the first output of the movie, and I had it in my hands. The Ranch has these bikes so we can ride between the buildings, and I put all the tapes in the front basket and rode back to the Tech Building….
The acclaimed artist discusses his history with Episode I and being called on to commemorate its latest milestone.

Every saga has a beginning, including that of poster artist Matt Ferguson and his relationship with Star Wars: The Phantom Menace. It started with the original theatrical release in 1999, which followed a huge buildup — it was the first Star Wars film since 1983’s Return of the Jedi — and level of anticipation seen by few movies. For 15-year-old Ferguson, living in Sheffield in the UK, the hype was real.
“I was actually doing work experience at the time in an office through school, and I remember just being so excited about the new Star Wars movie,” he tells StarWars.com. “I went out and bought this Darth Maul action figure on a lunch break and everybody else was just so excited for it. And then we got to go see it. And I can remember I just loved it.”…

Kevin Feige is no longer headed to a galaxy far, far away. The Marvel Studios boss, who was developing a Star Wars feature to produce, is moving on to other things as he focuses on the dozens of films and TV shows on his plate in the MCU.
When asked if his Star Wars feature was happening, he told Entertainment Tonight simply: “No.” It was part of a larger interview at the Las Vegas premiere of The Marvels Tuesday…

In an exclusive interview with StarWars.com, the actor discusses his major sequence in The Mandalorian, as well as his Star Wars past and future.
After months of conversation, reflection, and planning, Ahmed Best was ready to take his first steps back into the larger world of Star Wars. At the invitation of Jon Favreau, Dave Filoni, and Rick Famuyiwa, executive producers of The Mandalorian, he would be playing Kelleran Beq, the Jedi who saves Grogu during the Order 66 attack on the Jedi Temple. But it wasn’t until one specific moment that it all became real.
“As soon as I put the robes on for my first costume test, and I walked on to get approval from Jon and Dave, and they handed me a lightsaber, I was like, ‘Oh, I’m in this,’” Best tells StarWars.com. “And boom, Kelleran Beq came alive.”
The identity of who rescued Grogu during the Jedi purge had long been teased on the Disney+ series. Hazy flashbacks and discussion have been peppered throughout the show, and finally, the truth was revealed in this week’s “Chapter 20: The Foundling”: Best’s Jedi defends Grogu from a clone trooper onslaught, ferries him away in a speeder chase, and finally, escapes to the stars with the young being. It’s a thrilling sequence, and for Star Wars fans who know of Best’s complex history with the saga, there’s an added emotional resonance to seeing him return in such a meaningful way…

Pedro Pascal has become one of the most recognizable leading actors in Hollywood due, in part, to a meteoric rise to fame as the star of The Mandalorian, the man behind the mask of Din Djarin’s gleaming armor.
In fact, it’s not unusual for Pascal to hear one of the Disney+ series’ most quotable lines while he’s out and about in his daily life. “I love walking down the street and then randomly, you know, just forgetting myself,” he tells StarWars.com. “And then somebody passes by me and says, ‘This is the Way.’” Sometimes he gamely says it back, as his character might in conversation with The Armorer. Other times, he takes the opportunity to have a little fun with the fan, pointing this way or that. “That’s the way? Oh, this is the way! Yes, of course.”
It’s all part of Pascal’s laidback charm, soft-spoken with a quiet gratitude for the five years he’s spent playing the eponymous hero of The Mandalorian so far. “I’m paralyzed at the thought that five years have gone by,” he says jokingly. “And then pretty soon five more. This is a different kind of interview than I was expecting…

After five years, Supreme Leader Snoke has returned—well, in a way.
Andy Serkis, who brought the villain to life via mo-cap for The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi, unexpectedly popped back up in the Star Wars universe recently thanks to the Disney+ series Andor.
However, despite formerly playing Snoke, this time, he plays a man named Kino Loy, who is the floor leader in the work prison where the leading character finds himself trapped.
Currently, the character seems entirely separate from Snoke, which is likely to remain the case. However, that hasn’t stopped some fans from generating wild theories that Kino will one day become Snoke.
Now, the incredible actor behind the new character has spoken about what makes Kino tick and his thoughts on fans’ expectations regarding his past portrayal of Snoke…

Drawing Chewbacca and His Family
Ever wanted to draw Star Wars characters and vehicles just like the professional comic book artists? In this step-by-step series, Star Wars artists and illustrators show you how to draw some of the most beloved characters in the saga.
Star Wars illustrator Cynthia Cummens-Narcisi explains with these easy-to-follow steps how to draw Chewbacca, his wife Malla and his son Lumpy from “The Star Wars Holiday Special.” Steps 1-3 are to be drawn lightly with a pencil. Finished lines and details will come at the end.
Step One:
This may look like an advanced tutorial, but even the beginning artist can get something out of it. With any drawing you make, begin by lightly sketching in your figures. You might decide ahead of time what you want your composition to look like by drawing thumbnails in your sketchbook.
Step Two:
Begin to fill in your sketch with larger shapes. Don’t get too involved in drawing detail yet. Just make sure as you begin your sketch that the composition is balanced. Sketch with a light hand, and don’t press too hard. If you’d like to use the same supplies professional artists use, try drawing with a HB pencil for your rough sketch. H pencils can be difficult to erase so don’t use anything harder than an HB.
Step Three:
You’ve probably been anxious to add detail. I drew an apron on Malla to break up the colors a bit. I also placed that X-wing Fighter into the composition to add a nice splash of color. Is Lumpy enjoying Wookiee cookies in your sketch? Maybe you can draw some other unusual food he might have stolen off the table.
Step Four:
Now that you polished your sketch, you can start the fun part, the part everyone loves — coloring! You can use anything you want to color it like crayons, colored pencils, watercolors or maybe scan your image and color it in Adobe Photoshop. I used my beloved Copic Markers and colored pencils. There’s lots of layering of color involved, and blending (which I love to do), so be patient if you try this. Notice how loosely I placed that first layer of color.
Step Five:
Here’s the drawing after many layers of color have been applied. I even started adding more detail just with colored pencil.
Step Six:
Add more contrast by making some areas darker. Then I then grabbed some Deleter White which is similar to White Out in that it’s used primarily by comic book artists to make corrections. It can be watered down and applied in thin washes over a painting or applied opaquely. There’s lots of uses and a lot of artists use it, but you can also use a white colored pencil or a gel pen, or white acrylic paint and a very fine brush to add some nice white highlights.
One thing you might be tempted to do is to draw every strand of Wookiee fur. Resist the temptation to do that! Focus on just suggesting the fur by drawing fewer lines than you think you’ll need. Be as creative as you want to be with your sketch. That’s the magic of the Star Wars universe — once you’re in it, there are no limitations to your artistry.

Cassian Andor’s journey from Kenari orphan to hero of the Rebel Alliance is just beginning.
In the first three-episode arc of Andor, the new Star Wars Original series now streaming on Disney+, we learned more about what drew the young man into the fight against the Empire, how he met his found family on Ferrix, and even stepped inside his childhood bedroom for a glimpse at what shaped Cassian’s youth.
Behind the scenes, star Diego Luna’s return to the role has been a journey six years in the making. After being cast in 2016’s Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Luna couldn’t have predicted that he’d have the chance to tell the origin story of Cassian Andor. “I’ve been involved as an executive producer, so I’ve been reading the material from the beginning,” Luna tells StarWars.com of the latest Star Wars live-action series. “And it’s been very important for me to understand the journey and what needs to happen this first year. It’s crucial. It’s the year where [Cassian’s] awakening begins.”…
