As George Lucas was in his final years at Lucasfilm, he had some projects in the pipeline and on the verge of release, but they never happened. Via new interview highlights with producer Rick McCallum and writer Ronald D. Moore, we learn more about STAR WARS UNDERWORLD, the live-action STAR WARS TV show that had 50-60 fully written scripts ready-to-go, but was eventually abandoned. And Seth Green recently shared info about the fully-produced, but never-released animated comedy series STAR WARS DETOURS. These key creatives discussed their experiences working with Lucas on those shows and why fans will never get the chance to see them. In other news, we review interview clips of Daisy Ridley and screenwriter Stephen Knight talking about the ever-in-development “New Jedi Order” film featuring Rey. Plus, we discuss potential STAR WARS animated projects that may be in the works, “Star Wars in Pop Culture” features Mark Hamill on “Space Ghost Coast-to-Coast”, and we have a huge announcement about the next RFR LIVE event happening later this year. It’s one you won’t want to miss!

The veteran sound artist was among the first crew members to work on the Star Wars prequel entry.
The first person to watch the initial assembly of Star Wars: The Phantom Menace (1999) wasn’t director George Lucas. It was then-25-year-old Matthew Wood of Skywalker Sound. As he tells StarWars.com, picture editors Ben Burtt and Paul Martin Smith had spent weeks with Lucas at Skywalker Ranch compiling the first rough version of Episode I. Hours long and far from the refined cut that audiences would see, it was up to Wood to review it and make notes about voices that needed recording.
“Paul and Ben ran out their sequences on video tapes for me,” Wood recalls, “and as I walked into their office, they were all stacked up really high on the table. George Lucas said, ‘Well, here you go, Matt. You’re the first person that’s going to watch the whole movie from beginning to end.’” George was obviously watching everything between the two editing rooms, but they hadn’t screened the movie in its entirety yet. This was the first output of the movie, and I had it in my hands. The Ranch has these bikes so we can ride between the buildings, and I put all the tapes in the front basket and rode back to the Tech Building….
The narrative that “Star Wars was ruined by a woke agenda” has gained traction among some fans and commentators, but this perspective is highly controversial and often oversimplifies the complexities of both the franchise and modern storytelling. Here, I’ll break down the arguments commonly made, as well as offer a broader perspective on the topic.
The Evolution of Star Wars
The “Star Wars” franchise, created by George Lucas, began in 1977 as a groundbreaking space opera that captured the imagination of audiences around the world. It combined innovative special effects with a mythic hero’s journey, and its success led to sequels, prequels, and an expansive universe of books, comics, and animated series.
Over the decades, Star Wars has evolved, reflecting changes in society, technology, and filmmaking. With Disney’s acquisition of Lucasfilm in 2012, the franchise entered a new era, beginning with “The Force Awakens” in 2015. This film, along with subsequent entries, introduced a more diverse cast of characters, including prominent roles for women and people of color.
The “Woke Agenda” Criticism
Critics who argue that Star Wars has been “ruined” by a woke agenda often focus on the perceived injection of modern social and political issues into the franchise. They point to several key areas:
Feminist Themes: The portrayal of strong female characters like Rey and the leadership roles of Leia and Admiral Holdo in “The Last Jedi” have also been cited as evidence of a feminist agenda. Some fans argue that these characters overshadow male counterparts or that their roles are not sufficiently earned within the narrative.
Subversion of Expectations: “The Last Jedi,” directed by Rian Johnson, faced significant backlash for subverting fan expectations. The film took bold narrative risks, such as Luke Skywalker’s unexpected character arc and the deconstruction of the traditional hero’s journey. Critics of the “woke” perspective argue that these changes were made to challenge traditional narratives and appeal to a more progressive audience.
Social Commentary: Some fans believe that recent Star Wars films have incorporated overt social commentary at the expense of storytelling. They argue that themes of class struggle, animal rights (as seen with the Fathiers in “The Last Jedi”), and other contemporary issues detract from the escapist fantasy that Star Wars traditionally offered.
A Broader Perspective
While these criticisms are valid from the perspective of some fans, it’s important to consider the broader context:
Storytelling Choices: The decisions made by filmmakers like J.J. Abrams and Rian Johnson are often more about creative direction than political messaging. The Star Wars franchise has always been about more than just good versus evil; it’s about hope, redemption, and the power of individuals to make a difference. Modern iterations continue these themes while also experimenting with new ideas and challenging traditional tropes.
Fan Expectations vs. Creative Vision: The idea that Star Wars should remain unchanged can be seen as a limitation on creative freedom. Filmmakers are tasked with balancing respect for the original trilogy with the need to keep the franchise fresh and relevant. What some fans see as an unwelcome shift in focus, others view as necessary growth.
The Role of Fandom: Star Wars has always had a passionate fan base, and with that passion comes strong opinions. The rise of social media has amplified these voices, sometimes leading to polarized debates. While it’s important for fans to express their views, it’s equally crucial to recognize the subjective nature of these opinions and the diversity of the fan community.
The debate over whether Star Wars has been “ruined” by a woke agenda is emblematic of broader cultural shifts and the challenges of updating a beloved franchise. While some fans feel that recent films have strayed too far from what made Star Wars special, others appreciate the efforts to make the galaxy far, far away more inclusive and reflective of today’s world.
Ultimately, whether one believes that Star Wars has been “ruined” or revitalized may come down to personal perspective. What remains clear is that Star Wars continues to be a cultural touchstone, inspiring passionate discussions and debates that reflect its enduring impact on popular culture.

Here’s the latest from Variety
A half-century ago when George Lucas decided to make “Star Wars,” a core visual effects team was handed a sizable challenge: Figure out a believable way to transport audiences to a galaxy far, far away. Essential to that goal was the development of a new type of motion control camera system: built in a Van Nuys warehouse where the production filmed space-set scenes such as the climatic trench run.
Now fans in Southern California can see the historic Dykstraflex camera system, newly restored and in working order, on display at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures starting Saturday in recognition of May the 4th, aka Star Wars day. The system weighs 1,500 lbs. and will be demonstrated by VFX vets with a 14-foot track and studio scale replicas of the Millennium Falcon, which is five-feet long, and a 20-inch X-Wing fighter…

Today we take a look at why these numbers aren’t actually that surprising given the way the Galactic Republic fights wars.
