In Star Wars Legends lore, Darth Sidious is often portrayed as a cold manipulator who views everyone as expendable, yet the relationship between Palpatine and Darth Maul reveals a far more complex and disturbing truth. Drawing from sources like the Journal of Darth Maul, this video explores how Sidious invested deeply in Maul’s training, education, and future, raising him not merely as an assassin but as a true Sith apprentice shaped through calculated cruelty, reward, and psychological control. From brutal childhood trials to rare gifts like the Sith Infiltrator and advanced Sith knowledge, the evidence suggests that Maul held unique value in Sidious’ long term plans, making his loss on Naboo a genuine blow to the Dark Lord. This deep dive examines whether Sidious truly cared for Maul in the only way a Sith can value another being and what Maul’s survival meant for the Rule of Two and the future of the Sith
Maul Shadow Lord is coming in April! We got the first teaser and an article on StarWars.com, so let’s talk about what we know about the series, and break everything down!
The Dathomirian is an iconic villain in the Star Wars galaxy, yet remains a mysterious figure.
By Lucas Seastrom
Ever since his iconic debut in Star Wars: The Phantom Menace, Maul has had a way of showing up where he’s least expected.
Midway through the original television run of Star Wars: The Clone Wars, he seemingly came back from the dead to seek revenge against Obi-Wan Kenobi. In the midst of a cast of mostly new characters in Star Wars Rebels, we saw Maul reemerge as a dangerous manipulator. And at the end of a live-action feature about the original trilogy scoundrel Han Solo, Solo: A Star Wars Story, Maul the crime lord made a surprise cameo.
Maul’s prevalence is all the more poignant because, somehow, he manages to remain so enigmatic. With the first trailer tease below signaling his upcoming return in Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord, the new animated series on Disney+ later this year, it’s worth taking stock of what we know about the Dathomirian Zabrak so far…
Count Dooku’s opinion of Darth Maul is far more complex than most Star Wars fans realize. Early on, Dooku despised Maul, seeing him as a brutal assassin rather than a true Sith Lord. But as the Clone Wars progressed and Dooku’s understanding of the dark side deepened, that hatred evolved into something unexpected, respect.
This video explores the death of Qui-Gon Jinn, Makashi versus Maul’s brutal combat style, Sith hierarchy, and why Dooku ultimately acknowledged Maul as a great Sith Lord without ever believing he was inferior to him.
A deep dive into Sith philosophy and one of Star Wars’ most overlooked character dynamics.
Concept and storyboard artist Iain McCaig was among the first to join Episode I’s art department and played a central role in designing many iconic characters.
By Lucas Seastrom
In 1995, Star Wars: The Phantom Menace(1999) was still two years from starting principal photography and four years from release, but Lucasfilm’s art department at Skywalker Ranch was well underway creating designs and concepts for the innumerable characters, locations, and vehicles in the film. This included a new villain: Darth Maul.
“George [Lucas] just came up and said, ‘Darth Maul, he’s our new Sith Lord,’ and he walked away,” recalls artist Iain McCaig, who by that point had been working primarily on hero characters. “I didn’t know if Maul was male or female, an alien, anything. It freaked me out at the beginning that I didn’t get much direction. Then I realized that maybe he picked me because he liked my work and wanted me to show him what I thought a Darth Maul might look like. George clearly enjoys reacting to visuals. One of his many skills is that he can look at fifty things, make choices, move things around, take a head from this character and put it on the body of that one over there, and suddenly, it’s Star Wars. We learned to trust him and also to trust ourselves.”…
For our 50th of 100 Star Wars interviews, we travelled to Tokyo, Japan where we met Darth Maul actor Ray Park. And his excitement for continuing as Darth Maul is infectious, as you can see here.

Twenty-five years on from his debut in Star Wars: The Phantom Menace, Darth Maul continues to fascinate fans. Whether it’s his look, his deadly agility, or evolution into underworld mastermind, Maul connects on a number of levels. And of course, there’s that lightsaber, still undeniably awesome.
So it’s little surprise — and welcome news, which StarWars.com is excited to reveal — that Palpatine’s Sith apprentice will be the focus of Marvel’s next gritty Black, White & Red tale. Star Wars: Darth Maul – Black, White & Red will be a four-issue miniseries, each installment written and drawn by a different creative team….

Why didn’t Maul use the darksaber during the Siege of Mandalore or in Solo: A Star Wars Story? Why did he seemingly stop wielding it altogether? We don’t have a definite answer, but my headcanon is that he knew keeping the darksaber was important to his control over Death Watch, which was already tenuous. After losing his duel against Darth Sidious, he probably wanted to keep it hidden away where no rival could take it from him. He basically kept it hostage so he could continue commanding Mandalorian forces, and so he took up a double bladed red lightsaber in its place. After Mandalore fell under Imperial control, it seemed like Maul simply kept the item as a trophy on Dathomir.
