Weaving Character

Here’s the latest from: StarWars.Com

Learn how the Emmy-nominated designer created hundreds of costumes to populate an Chandrilan wedding, a Ghorman city, and more!

By Jade Fabello

Andor Season 2 tells the story of rebellion across multiple fronts. In Andor, no single gunshot or speech defines what it means to oppose oppressive regimes. Instead, pulling from showrunner and writer Tony Gilroy’s deep study of history, we see not only ground and high-level espionage but also delicate political maneuvering that forces every character involved to sacrifice or risk personal happiness, safety, or relationships. And each new world seen in the Disney+ series must be populated by hundreds of uniquely-costumed extras to make every location feel as real as the last.

Emmy-nominated costume designer Michael Wilkinson — who worked on both seasons and has been nominated for his work on Episode 3 “Harvest” alongside 13 other Emmy Award nominations for the series including Outstanding Drama Series — faced unique design challenges working specifically on a Star Wars show. “We often worked extensively with the Creature FX department. We had a whole team within the costume department that made the costumes for this diverse, eccentric bunch of characters,” Wilkinson tells StarWars.com. But at its core, Andor is a show that focuses on its human characters, like Senator Mon Mothma and the people of Ghorman. And with that, Wilkinson was tasked with finding a way to weave the complex ideas of the story into the literal fabrics of the show….

Gar Saxon – ‘Star Wars’ Character Spotlight

Here’s the latest from Star Wars News Net

We’re profiling Gar Saxon this week in our Star Wars Character Spotlight.

Gar Saxon was a Mandalorian of little moral integrity. Member of Clan Saxon and the Death Watch terrorist group, Gar recognized power and always sided with those he thought had the most of it at any given time. While most Star Wars fans likely remember him from Star Wars Rebels, Saxon also popped up in a couple of Clone Wars stories too. He was closely tied to Darth Maul and the darksaber.

Gar Saxon actually made his debut in the comic Darth Maul: Son of Dathomir, a story which was supposed to be part of The Clone Wars but got adapted into a four-issue comic miniseries instead, after the animated series’ temporary cancellation…

Aurra Sing – ‘Star Wars’ Character Spotlight

Here’s the latest from Star Wars News Net

Aurra Sing is the fearsome bounty hunter first glimpsed in The Phantom Menace who was then expanded upon in comics and novels. Like Cad Bane, she is a morally bankrupt bounty hunter who cares about little beyond getting paid no matter who she harms. Armed with a sniper rifle and built-in comlink antenna, she was a fearsome assassin.

While a lot of her Legends stories are no longer canon – which mainly means she no longer wields lightsabers – some fans might be surprised to know that she is still considered Force sensitive in current canon, considering George Lucas ignored that backstory completely when he used her in The Clone Wars

Here’s the latest from: The Direct – Star Wars

According to a new report, fans should expect to see a big Star Wars character show up in some of the franchise’s upcoming Disney+ series.

The success of The Mandalorian all the way back in 2019 spurred a renaissance for the franchise and led to multiple shows being ordered. This includes next year’s Skeleton Crew and Ahsoka along with 2024’s The Acolyte.

These new projects have also given fans the opportunity to see characters in parts of the Star Wars timeline that have never been seen before. Some of the highlights come in the form of Ahsoka after Star Wars: Rebels, Obi-Wan before A New Hope, and Cad Bane after his days in The Clone Wars and Bad Batch.

The most recent project to hit Disney’s streaming service was Andor, which went on to be loved across the board. Now it seems a character within that series will be showing up in other entries further down the timeline…

Boba Fett Actor Wants Disney to Make Character ‘Badass’ Again

Here’s the latest from: The Direct – Star Wars

Boba Fett actor Temuera Morrison wants to bring back the old “badass” side of his Star Wars bounty hunter in the future.

Despite only enjoying a few minutes of screen time in Star Wars’ original trilogy, Boba Fett has always been one of the franchise’s most iconic characters. Recently, the popular bounty hunter was given a new lease of life on Disney+ as Jango Fett actor Temuera Morrison stepped into the role for The Mandalorian Season 2.

Across both his adventures with Din Djarin and his The Book of Boba Fett spin-off, Disney was criticized for not delivering enough of the badassery that the character has long been associated with. And clearly, the actor behind Fett agrees as he has revealed how he wants that to change going forward…

Arjona Confirms Her Character Will Return For S2

Here’s the latest from: SWNN

Besides Cassian and Mon Mothma, and a few cameos (see Saw Gerrera), Andor will include mostly new characters. One of them is Cassian’s childhood friend and love interest, Bix Caleen, played by Adria Arjona. Bix and Cassian are both living in his adopted homeworld, Ferrix, right before the Empire arrives. Bix has appeared in a few scenes of the trailers, but we’ve always seen her in the same setting (Ferrix), which led to speculation that she might not make it out alive of the first three episodes. Apparently, that might not be the case.

In a new interview with Collider, Arjona confirmed that her character will indeed return for the second season of the show, and said she has already discussed some details with showrunner Tony Gilroy…

Watto’s Character Development – From Concept to CG

Watto’s Character Development – From Concept to CG

Described as a cranky curmudgeon, a shyster, and a crooked salesman by his creators in the Lucasfilm Art Department and at ILM, Watto may not be the noblest character Episode I has to offer, but he certainly has a strong personality. Watto is a pudgy blue alien with a wide girth, elephantine snout, and hummingbird-like wings. His love of money is rivaled only by that of gambling. His short leathery wings propel him about his Mos Espa junk shop as he yells orders in Huttese to his slaves.

“George knew exactly what he wanted for this character,” said Design Director Doug Chiang. However, says Doug, the strange combination of physical traits that George requested threw them off for a time. They went through a few rounds of concept designs before getting Watto just right. The designers were used to George talking more in terms of concepts than specifics and he often gave the art department a lot of freedom in creating initial designs. So, thinking in these terms, Doug and artists Terryl Whitlatch and Iain McCaig came up with a several variations on the Watto theme. Terryl’s interpretation of Watto was of a very pudgy parrot with full wings and an impressive waistline. Iain’s rendition was a hefty four-armed beast puffing a cigar.

When these concepts did not earn George’s stamp of approval, Doug decided to give him quite literally what he asked for. “I took a head from a previous creature design that George liked, put it on this funky body and gave it hummingbird wings and George came in and said, that’s it!” Watto’s costume came easily says Doug, who dressed him in a vest and toolbelt loaded with gadgets. George approved the design and requested only that Watto be given webbed feet and a pair of pants. “Watto was this conglomeration of odd things that really didn’t fit, but that in the end gave him a very unique and powerful personality,” says Doug.

When Watto moved from concept art to ILM’s CG modelers, a whole set of new issues arose. It was their job to realize Watto as a fully CG character. Modeling Supervisor Geoff Campell said that at first he was a bit skeptical. “It just didn’t seem logical that this old chubby alien was going to be propelled by wings.” But viewing Watto by our principles of physics just wasn’t going to work. So, they thought in terms of Watto’s alien environment and imagined him filled with a kind of gas. His wings became a means to propel him versus supporting his weight.

Watto was modeled by Modeler Steve Aplin, who spent about four weeks creating a library of his movements and facial expressions. “We had Steve use a variety of sources to create speech patterns for the bilingual alien,” said Geoff. Steve had video footage of Watto’s voice actor speaking, photos of ILM animator Rob Coleman doing his impersonation of Watto, and he also used a mirror to examine how his own face moved while speaking Watto’s lines.

The biggest problem, though, were Watto’s large tusks which gave him personality but prevented the alien from completely closing his mouth. For speaking the letters ‘B’ and ‘M’, for example, the modelers couldn’t achieve proper lip movement and they played with the idea of reducing or doing away with Watto’s teeth altogether.

A few other bits and pieces of Watto had already been lost in the modeling process because of complications, like a hat that would have kept Watto’s face in perpetual shadow, and a nose ring which created skin stretching problems.

But, Doug refused to back down on Watto’s teeth. “I felt very strongly that we needed those teeth because they really added to his personality. His other attributes that were lost weren’t critical to his character.” The end result was to actually add more than they took away. “As a compromise, I suggested that we break one tooth which would allow him to close one side of his mouth to give him an asymmetrical way of talking,” says Doug. In the end, Watto was given a war wound and a speech impediment which added to his mean-old-curmudgeon persona.
