Lightsabers… With Tom?

Star Wars: Starfighter director Shawn Levy has confirmed an unexpected lightsaber scene with a difference. Star Wars is finally returning to the big screen this year with The Mandalorian & Grogu, but all eyes are already turning to 2027. The 50th anniversary of Star Wars, this will feature the original cut of A New Hope returning to theaters, as well as Shawn Levy’s Starfighter, the first movie set after the sequel trilogy. Featuring an all-star cast including Ryan Gosling, Matt Smith, Mia Goth, and Amy Adams, this is easily one of the most exciting Star Wars films in years.

Speaking to the New York Times, Levy has revealed Starfighter features an unexpected lightsaber duel – and that Tom Cruise was involved. According to Levy, he’d had a steady stream of Hollywood A-listers visiting during filming. “Last week Steven Spielberg was here,” he recalled, and now Cruise was on-set…

Celebrate the Star Wars Saga with a Festive Holiday Short

Here’s the latest from: StarWars.Com

The trench run from Star Wars: A New Hope has been reimagined in gingerbread cookies for a stylized holiday Star Wars Mini by Industrial Light & Magic.

By StarWars.com Team

This holiday season, we have the perfect gift to share your love of Star Wars and the magic of creativity with your favorite younglings. Arriving on Star Wars Kids this Tuesday, a bite-sized short from the wizards at Industrial Light & Magic reimagines a classic scene from Star Wars: A New Hope with a delicious twist: the Death Star, Darth Vader, and the Rebel Alliance fleet of X-wings has been crafted entirely out of gingerbread cookies!

This stylized animation is just one of the ways ILM artists are paying homage to the Star Wars galaxy, finding creative ways to explore both their craft and their love of the saga. “The Gingerbread Death Star Trench Run” was created by ILM’s artists, including Landis Fields, a real time principal creative, using some of the same unreal engine technology used to craft the sprawling worlds of Star Wars video games and visualize the far-flung locales of recent Star Wars live-action series.

“We all love to spread joy and inspire people to make things and to imagine things,” Fields tells StarWars.com. “If you look all the way back to Walt Disney and George Lucas, and the folks after them that carried the baton and built these companies up, you’ll see that that is always at the root.”…

Tales from The Star Wars Original Trilogy with ILM’s Stuart Ziff

Audio Podcast

As Star Wars was being developed back in the mid-70s, the maverick special effects crew at ILM were pioneering new filmmaking technologies in often unconventional ways. In the early days, machinist Stuart Ziff found himself thrust into the action on day one. In the years that followed, Stuart used his skills in a variety of ways at ILM including working on Return of the Jedi creature costumes like Admiral Ackbar, Nein Nunb and Ree Yees, and on many projects from Dragonslayer to Ghostbusters to Jurassic Park. This week on RFR, Stuart joins us In The Cantina to share fascinating stories about working on the Star Wars Original Trilogy and beyond. Plus, our review of Star Wars Visions season 3 and Jimmy Mac had the opportunity to see a Star Wars Holiday Special legend perform live in Chicago. Listen to find out who it was!

Andor Season 2 with Tony Gilroy & Diego Luna

Here’s the latest from: StarWars.Com

Watch the special live stream event for a chance to see your questions answered on YouTube May 13 ahead of the Season 2 finale on Disney+ that evening.

By StarWars.com Team

It’s almost time to send Cassian Andor off as he takes his final steps to Scarif in the Andor Season 2 finale next week.

To mark the occasion, the end of a five year journey for the cast and crew behind the critically-acclaimed and beloved Star Wars series, Star Wars YouTube will host a special LIVE Q&A — Andor Season 2 with Tony Gilroy & Diego Luna — covering the momentous events of Season 2.

Join creator Tony Gilroy and series star Diego Luna (Cassian Andor himself), Tuesday, May 13 at 12 pm ET / 9 am PT as they’re joined by special guests Denise Gough (Dedra Meero), Kyle Soller (Syril Karn), Elizabeth Dulau (Kleya Marki), Genevieve O’Reilly (Mon Mothma) and Adria Arjona (Bix Caleen) to talk about the journey so far.

“I think the banality of evil runs through the entire show,” Gilroy tells StarWars.com. “Season 1 is about the education and radicalization of Cassian, about the making of a revolutionary. Season 2 is…you could call it the ‘Winds of War.’ It’s a whole bunch of characters that hopefully you really care about and suddenly there’s that inevitable moment where things have just gone too far and the inertia of the Rebellion and Empire conflict is too strong. It’s coming. There’s no way to stop it. And I think it’s about a lot of people, ordinary people, being pressured by this unstoppable force of war that’s coming.”…

An Interview with Doug Chiang and Oliver Scholl

Here’s the latest from: StarWars.Com

The co-production designers on the series explore bucolic At Attin, the bustling pirate port of Borgo, and the Onyx Cinder, an all-new Star Wars spaceship.

By Kristin Baver

The very idea of Star Wars: Skeleton Crew — an adventure told from the perspective of four young travelers seeing the wider world for the first time — invites the design of new worlds in rich color palettes, transfixing the characters and fans at home with all the splendor and danger the galaxy far, far away has to offer.

Behind the scenes, co-production designers Doug Chiang and Oliver Scholl tackled the job with more than half a century of filmmaking experience between them. “One of the joys of working with Oli is that it’s a terrific collaboration, because he brings a very distinct perspective to it,” says Chiang, Lucasfilm’s Senior Vice President and Executive Design Director. “I love those kinds of collaborations because we get fresh ideas. He may suggest something that I hadn’t thought of before, and it’s a terrific way of world building. It feels more authentic, and I think that’s one of the things that’s so important for Star Wars, is that we want this to feel authentic.” …

Ben Burtt Talks Sound Design and Picture Editing with George Lucas

Here’s the latest from: StarWars.Com

Lucasfilm’s first sound designer wore multiple hats on The Phantom Menace and played a central role in crafting the first Star Wars prequel.

By Lucas Seastrom

Back in 1975, Ben Burtt had been hired as the sound designer for Star Wars: A New Hope (1977), becoming one of the first artists of any discipline to work on George Lucas’ space fantasy. Some two decades later, as Lucas began to lay the groundwork for his new prequel trilogy of Star Wars films, Burtt was recruited once again to join the upstart crew.

“I had been working on some project at the Technical Building at Skywalker Ranch,” Burtt tells StarWars.com, “and I got a call from Jane Bay, George’s executive assistant, and she said, ‘Ben, George wants to talk to you about something. Can you come up right now?’ [laughs] I knew that they always started this way.”…

Sound-mixing The Phantom Menace with Gary Rydstrom

Here’s the latest from: StarWars.Com

The award-winning artist from Skywalker Sound made his Star Wars debut as a re-recording mixer on Episode I.

By Lucas Seastrom

By 1999, sound artist Gary Rydstrom had worked at Skywalker Sound for 16 years. He’d won seven Academy Awards for his work on Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991), Jurassic Park (1993), Titanic (1997), and Saving Private Ryan (1999). He was on the cutting edge of Lucasfilm’s pioneering work in digital sound technology. But he still hadn’t worked on a Star Wars movie.

“I will point out that I worked on Spaceballs [1987], so that kind of counts,” Rydstrom notes with a laugh. He’d joined the company in 1983, only months after the completion of Star Wars: Return of the Jedi. His work on the Mel Brooks parody Spaceballs and the theme park attraction Star Tours would be as close as he’d get before Star Wars: The Phantom Menace (1999) came along. “That was the first real honest-to-God Star Wars film that I got to work on.”…

Animating The Phantom Menace with ILM’s Rob Coleman

Here’s the latest from: StarWars.Com

Today’s creative director of ILM’s Sydney studio talks Jar Jar Binks, digital armies, and working with George Lucas on the project of a lifetime.

By Lucas Seastrom

Fairly late in Star Wars: The Phantom Menace (1999), as the heroes plan their concerted attack on the Trade Federation army occupying Naboo, Jar Jar Binks and Boss Nass have a brief moment together. They walk through a forest, the shorter and squatter Boss Nass’ arm wrapped around Jar Jar’s taller and lankier shoulders. The onetime Gungan outcast is now in rising favor with his people’s leader, and Jar Jar enjoys brushing off Boss Nass’ adulations with mock-humility. It is only when Nass tells Jar Jar that he is to be made a general that Jar Jar breaks character and faints with surprise.

The moment is portrayed in one shot as the camera pans from right to left. The characters’ equal sense of playfulness and pomposity is fun and believable, communicated in large part by their body language and distinct inflections of speech. It’s a type of scene that could be in any kind of movie. What makes this scene different from most others up to that point in time, however, is that both Jar Jar Binks and Boss Nass are computer-animated by the artists at Industrial Light & Magic (ILM), with voice performances by Ahmed Best and Brian Blessed, respectively….
