Figures of Speech: Andor’s Monologues

Here’s the latest from: StarWars.Com

The critically acclaimed series is filled with incredible monologues that inspire hope, call-out evil, and remind us what the Rebellion is all about.

By Brandon Wainerdi

“General Kenobi, years ago you served my father in the Clone Wars…”

Ever since Princess Leia Organa delivered a staticky hologram message to a pondering Obi-Wan Kenobi, monologues have remained a vital part of Star Wars storytelling, including Yoda’s meditations on the Force and Sheev Palpatine’s manipulative tale of Darth Plagueis the Wise. Sometimes interrupted, always passionate, these singular speeches help viewers gain a deeper understanding into a character’s worldview and needs, galactic or otherwise.

In Andor, a legion of script writers led by series creator Tony Gilroy wield monologues as an emotional weapon. We’ve chosen eight of our favorites from both seasons of the series; our collection, written by Tony Gilroy, Dan Gilroy, and Beau Willimon, focuses on the instrumental individuals behind the rebel uprising against the Galactic Empire, while giving viewers deeper insight into the developing worldview of Cassian Andor…

Andor’s Depiction Of The Senate Is Perfect

Andor has given us our best look at the Imperial Senate we have ever seen. That’s awesome by itself, but it’s also very much in line with how George Lucas envisioned the government might be way back in 1977.

Dressing The Galaxy: The Look Of Andor‘s Costumes

Here’s the latest from: StarWars.Com

Syril Karn’s pristine Pre-Mor uniform — complete with “pockets, piping, and some light tailoring” — is more than a hint at the character’s fussy nature and desire for the kind of order promised by the Empire. It’s also one of costume designer Michael Wilkinson’s favorite scenes in the series’ premiere episode, “Kassa.”

“I love that scene. Those two actors are so fantastic. And if I may say so, the costumes tell you quite a lot in that scene,” Wilkinson tells StarWars.com. “You have the precision and fastidiousness of Syril Karn’s uniform that he has personalized, customized, and made exactly how he wants it to be. And then his boss, on the other hand, is wearing a uniform that’s crumpled and dirty and has a couple of stains down the front of his shirt and a jacket he shrugs on that he’s had for 20 years.”

The two variations are among hundreds of costumes that Wilkinson and his team designed and fabricated for the actors on Andor, with all 12 episodes in Season 1 now streaming on Disney+. “I really enjoy playing with the language of clothes,” he says. “We wanted these things to be so rich with meaning and deserve repeated viewings that you could go deeper with it all. And, you know, it’s the only way that I really know how to work, to actually construct these backstories and worlds and civilizations so that everything has meaning. Otherwise, it’s fashion design, not costume design.”

Wilkinson recently sat down to talk about how his work helped telegraph Cassian Andor’s character evolution, the heartbreaking backstory of the costumes on Kenari, and the one item he kept from his time working on the production…

Lucasfilm Restricted Andor’s Sex & Violence

Here’s the latest from: The Direct – Star Wars

Andor has taken a deeper dive into mature content than previous Star Wars stories, though creator Tony Gilroy was restricted by Lucasfilm in exploring two concepts in-depth onscreen on Disney+.

The series made its intentions clear immediately when Cassian Andor visited a brothel in the opening sequence of the first episode. Intimate relationships between characters have been covered in ways more blunt than anything else Star Wars has ever done, like things getting steamy between Bix and Timm on Ferrix and their bedroom discussion the morning after.

Violence has been fairly on-brand for Star Wars, though Andor doesn’t shy away from taking out many of the good guys, too. Blood in large capacities is seen infrequently in the galaxy far, far away, mostly due to the weapons cauterizing wounds. Cassian and fellow rebels have killed their foes heartlessly, but gore has never been extreme.

For a longtime filmmaker like Gilroy, it was imperative that he have free reign to tell his story as he saw fit. Given the histories Disney and Lucasfilm have in media, the producer was uncertain if a partnership would last. Fortunately, he was afforded full creative freedom, with a request to dial it back on two key elements…

Let’s Talk About Andor’s Ratings

A report from Parrot Analytics shows that Andor is not getting nearly the same amount of views as the other Star Wars series. But I don’t think it gives us any reason to worry about the future of the series, and here is why.

Data Reveals Andor’s Audience Struggles

Here’s the latest from: The Direct – Star Wars

Andor may feature a familiar character from a familiar Star Wars story, but Lucasfilm’s latest series for Disney+ is unlike any other fans have seen on the streamer thus far.

In addition to its 12-episode seasons with time jumps, Andor stands apart in that it’s more for adults than kids in both its content and complexity and is not a continuation of Dave Filoni and Jon Favreau’s ongoing Mando-Verse.

Instead, Andor is a product of Rogue One writer Tony Gilroy, and the first production to forgo The Volume and StageCraft for on-set locations.

But even though it differs from the likes of The Book of Boba Fett and The Mandalorian, audience response to these differences has been overwhelmingly positive. In fact, many already consider Andor one of the best Star Wars series to date.

However, while the Diego Luna-led series appears to be winning with fans and critics, it appears to be struggling in terms of audience demand.

How Andor’s Demand Compares to Other Disney+ Star Wars Series

According to Parrot Analytics’ Brandon Katz, data suggests that, despite Andor‘s success with fans and critics, audience demand for the series has been significantly lower than other Star Wars Disney+ series at relative points in their releases, including The Book of Boba Fett:

“The most disappointing trend I’ve come across recently is how audience demand for Andor is overwhelmingly lower than The Mandalorian S1-2, The Book of Boba Fett and Obi-Wan Kenobi despite the fact that it is easily the best Star Wars series BY FAR.”

Katz’s claim of how the demand for Andor is “overwhelmingly lower” than Lucasfilm’s other Star Wars series when they were airing can be seen in the graph below…

Andor’s Stolen Imperial Box Explained

In the first three episodes of Andor, Cassian attempts to sell a stolen Imperial box to Luthen Rael. He says it’s an untraceable NS-9 Starpath unit, but what is it, really? Cassian explains that it can track Imperial traffic for nine radial parsecs, but we know a little more about it thanks to the 1998 novel I, Jedi by Michael Stackpole, the only other story where this device has ever been mentioned. There we can read that the Starpath was the navigation system on the Errant Venture, which was a liberated star destroyer owned by the smuggler Booster Terrik in the years following the Battle of Endor. So we can assume that the box Cassian stole from the Empire was meant to be installed as the navigation system for a star destroyer. It likely had far more functions than tracking Imperial coordinates, but that would be the primary reason a rebel fighter like Luthen Rael would want to have it.
