The Star Wars: The High Republic co-authors of Escape from Valo talk about their longtime friendship and latest collaboration.

StarWars.com Team

Authors Daniel José Older and Alyssa Wong have been friends and fans of each other’s work for nearly a decade. After meeting in 2015 at the launch party for Older’s first novel, Half-Resurrection Blues, they quickly formed a mutual appreciation that went beyond the page.

Their shared beliefs in creating chaotic and flawed characters, an affinity for imagining a wide spectrum of individuals whose identities reflect the full array of real Star Wars fans, and a shorthand that includes sharing pictures of birds during brainstorming makes them uniquely suited to co-write Escape from Valo, the newest middle grade book in Star Wars: The High Republic. With a cast of kids that bring the charm of The Goonies crew to the world of Valo, their story imbues a sense of hope and self-discovery to a younger audience during a period of anarchy in which the Nihil remain victorious.

In the latest installment in the StarWars.com series celebrating Phase III in Star Wars: The High Republic, which continues next week with Escape from Valo arriving January 30 and the monthly release of Older’s ongoing Star Wars: The High Republic Adventures comic series tomorrow, listen in as the two writers reflect on their collaboration, their fictional kids, and avian character vibes…

Building the LEGO Star Wars Holiday Special

Here’s the latest from: StarWars.Com

Executive producers James Waugh and Josh Rimes reveal never-before-seen concept art and look back at the modern holiday classic.

It was the early days of Disney+. Lucasfilm had the opportunity to tell new stories for the fledgling streaming service, and inspiration could come from anywhere. Even playtime.

“There was a moment with our LEGO partnership where we wanted to reassess all we’d done before and challenge ourselves to see if we could find a fresh new expression of that collaboration, and a way to lean more into the way kids play with their LEGO Star Wars toys — they dump them on the floor and mix and match them. They’re not timeline dependent. We wanted to unlock that whimsy and wonder that’s unique to LEGO play in our linear content, and find a way to celebrate that experience in our storytelling,” James Waugh, SVP, franchise content and strategy at Lucasfilm, tells StarWars.com. “With the opportunity to do a special, we really realized that if it’s going to be a once a year experience, there’s something that just resonates about timeless holiday specials and the idea that, looking back, I think we all have pretty fond memories of specials that we watch every year over and over, that became tradition. We thought how great would it be to do that with LEGO Star Wars.”…

It’s time for jingle bells…and LEGO bricks!

Lucasfilm and the LEGO Group released today three new holiday-themed LEGO Star Wars shorts, all clever stories of celebration in the galaxy far, far away. There are two non-verbal tales: “Chewie’s Holiday Cheer Up,” which finds Chewie’s friends plotting a Life Day surprise for their Wookiee pal, and “Tenoo Treasures,” set during the High Republic era, which sees Yoda recruiting Padawans Kai and Lys from Star Wars: Young Jedi Adventures for some wreath building. “’Twas the Night Before Life Day,” featuring full voice acting, tells of a white bantha game on the Death Star — that is heavily tilted in the Emperor’s favor. These are the opening moments of “In the Stars,” a deeply moving entry in the international animated anthology series Star Wars: Visions Volume 2. The short comes from a team of creatives at the Chilean animation studio PunkRobot Studio. The Origins of Life Day

Here’s the latest from: StarWars.Com

Learn how a story element from an oft-maligned ‘70s TV special evolved into a cornerstone of the Star Wars galaxy.

Before you and your family gather your glowing orbs, don your ankle-length red smocks, and gather at the sacred tree to recite hallowed Shyriiwook verses in celebration of Life Day, let’s look back at the holiday’s origins. Not from within the Star Wars setting, mind you; rather, let’s examine its real-world history and evolution from an obscure TV source to an annual fan tradition.

The root of Life Day is found in The Star Wars Holiday Special, a star-studded 1978 prime time broadcast that aired on CBS once on November 17, 1978. After that broadcast, it was never to be (officially) seen again in the US and instead was relegated to bizarre cultural curiosity in the years that followed. The intent of the Holiday Special was to keep Star Wars in the public eye during the long three-year stretch between movies with new entertainment, using a tried-and-true television format of the 1970s: the variety special. The central premise of the show involved Han Solo trying to get Chewbacca to his family on Kashyyyk in time for Life Day, a sacred Wookiee holiday. Guest starring Bea Arthur, Harvey Korman, Diahann Carroll, Art Carney and Jefferson Starship, it was certainly something.Though we now know it as a Wookiee tradition, Life Day started off different in an untitled early outline for the Holiday Special, dated May 31, 1978: “… for one day each year, the galaxy celebrates the spirit of life and brotherhood with a festival. This year, it is the turn of the Wookiee planet to host the celebration…” In short order, the story streamlined things so that Life Day wasn’t a traveling event, but rather a wholly Wookiee holiday, tethered to the “Tree of Life” that grows in the Kashyyyk forest…

The Rancor Revealed

Here’s the latest from: StarWars.Com

In conversation with Tom Spina and the head of the Star Wars: Return of the Jedi monster shop, StarWars.com unveils the ferociously unique collectible.

In Phil Tippett’s mind, the rancor — Jabba the Hutt’s captive pet first seen in Star Wars: Return of the Jedi — was always going to be a puppet. But Star Wars creator George Lucas had other plans.

“George was usually pretty loose with his direction,” Tippett tells StarWars.com. “He said, ‘I need a big monster for the Jabba’s Palace scene.’” At that point, there wasn’t a complete script, just Lucas’ vision of Luke Skywalker falling into a pit beneath Jabba’s throne room and having to fight the beast within. “I came up with that design thinking that it was going to be a stop-motion or go-motion deal,” Tippett continues. “And then George said, ‘We’re going to make the best Godzilla suit ever!’ At which point Dennis [Muren] and I kind of went like, ‘Uh oh.’”…

All Wings Report In

Here’s the latest from: StarWars.Com

The Columbia team discusses giving Bubba Wallace’s racer an X-wing makeover.

Racing and cars have always been part of Star Wars’ DNA. George Lucas famously loved both, and you can see that appreciation reflected in the series’ warmly worn fighters, its sense of speed, and of course, the epic podrace sequence. “She doesn’t look like much, but she’s got it where it counts,” says Han Solo of the Millennium Falcon, and he sounds like anyone who’s ever had a beat-up car they still loved.

Columbia, a longtime Lucasfilm collaborator, has released Star Wars-themed collections every year since 2016, bringing in-universe looks to its famous outerwear. The company landed on Luke Skywalker’s X-wing flight suit as the inspiration for 2023’s range (launching December 1), which unexpectedly led to another collaboration — and one that hearkens back to the saga’s racing roots, as it’s with NASCAR. “We’ve had a relationship with Bubba Wallace, who races for [team] 23XI since 2020, and Columbia is one of the primary sponsors of the team,” Matt Merriman, VP of Columbia brand development tells StarWars.com. “But this year, creating the orange Star Wars flight suit collection, we were thinking, Luke and his orange pilot suit getting into his X-wing was very similar to Bubba in his race suit climbing into his rocket ship of a car. We thought, how fun would it be if we used that similarity as a way to promote the Star Wars collaboration?”…
