Rick Famuyiwa on Helping to Helm The Mandalorian Season 3
The executive producer and episodic director on the Disney+ series takes us back to the birth of Grogu and looks ahead as Season 3 continues to unfold.
Rick Famuyiwa feels like he’s graduated. After joining The Mandalorian in Season 1, where he directed “Chapter 2: The Child,” — among the first people in the world to discover the character that would come to be known as Grogu, — he’s ascended to the role of executive producer, alongside creator and executive producer Jon Favreau and executive producer Dave Filoni, and director of three episodes in Season 3 of the Disney+ series.
“I mean, it’s both exciting and unbelievable,” Famuyiwa tells StarWars.com. As a child, the first film Famuyiwa saw in theaters was Star Wars, so being invited to contribute to the galaxy far, far away has brought his fandom full circle. “I still, to this moment, go back and go, you know, ‘You had no idea when you went to watch this movie as a kid that somehow you would be part of telling a Star Wars story.’ It’s still kind of mind blowing to me that it happened,” he adds with a laugh. “It’s been a part of my life so long. What I loved about it was the instant connection it gave me to a lot of other people that loved the world.”…

Over the past two decades, the downfall of the Republic had been well-documented in a variety of movies, television shows, comics, and books. In Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith, for instance, we first saw the covert holograms of Darth Sidious ordering Order 66, Palpatine declaring himself Emperor in front of the Senate, and the construction of the first Death Star. In Star Wars: The Clone Wars, we learned more about inhibitor chips, the plans for the clone army, and more of the Sith lord’s machinations.
And now, in Star Wars: The Bad Batch, there is a previously un-glimpsed look at what comes immediately after: the first days of the Galactic Empire. For the time being, the next Star Wars film is scheduled for a December 2025 theatrical release. The previously slated move, Rogue Squadron, won’t be meeting its 2023 window and has instead been shelved. Given the current trend at Lucasfilm, the odds of a movie being ready in three years’ time almost seems like an impossibility.
It’s been abundantly clear for years that internal turmoil has stalled the film development process for the company since the completion of the sequel trilogy. This was confirmed last week when Lucasfilm SVP Michelle Rejwan was demoted. The producer was tasked with overseeing Rogue Squadron’s development – in addition to other new films – and was relieved of her duties following too many creative difficulties.
Now three years removed from the last silver-screen experience, Star Wars fans are itching to get back into theaters for a journey into the galaxy far, far away. That time is still a few years away, at best, and it’s not one that Lucasfilm is particularly looking forward to. With so much riding on the next theatrical title, Lucasfilm executives are actually worried about the franchise’s next steps…
