Today, Disney+ and Lucasfilm announced that the second volume of the animated anthology series “Star Wars: Visions” will premiere exclusively on Disney+ on May 4, 2023. Following on the Emmy Award®-nominated success of “Star Wars: Visions,” the newest volume will continue to push the boundaries of “Star Wars” storytelling, with nine new shorts from 9 studios from around the globe. Employing the most captivating animation styles from a variety of countries and cultures, the second volume offers a dynamic new perspective on the storied mythos of Star Wars.
The shorts included in “Star Wars: Visions” Volume 2 were created by the following international animation studios: El Guiri (Spain), Cartoon Saloon (Ireland), Punkrobot (Chile), Aardman (United Kingdom), Studio Mir (South Korea) Studio La Cachette (France), 88 Pictures (India), D’art Shtajio (Japan), and Triggerfish (South Africa). D’Art Shtajio’s short was created in collaboration with Lucasfilm Ltd. (United States).
“The reaction to the first volume of ‘Star Wars: Visions’ blew us away. We were delighted that this project inspired and resonated with so many people,” says James Waugh, “Star Wars: Visions” executive producer and Senior Vice President Franchise Content & Strategy at Lucasfilm. “We always saw ‘Star Wars: Visions’ as a framework for celebratory expressions of the franchise from some of the best creators working today. Animation is in a global renaissance, and we’re constantly staggered by the amount of creativity pushing the medium forward. With Volume 1, the imaginative minds of Japan’s anime industry were on full display. With Volume 2, we expanded our canvas to take audiences on a global tour of some of the most talented creators from around the world. We’re so proud to be able to reveal the line-up of studios we’ve assembled. Every short is incredible, full of heart, scope, imagination, and the values that make stories distinctly ‘Star Wars’ — all while opening up bold new ways of seeing what a ‘Star Wars’ story can be.”
Waugh executive produces “Star Wars: Visions” Volume 2 along with Jacqui Lopez and Josh Rimes.

Season 3 Premieres March 1, Exclusively on Disney+
Today, Disney+ shared brand-new key art and an exciting featurette for the third season of “The Mandalorian,” the critically acclaimed, original, live-action series from Lucasfilm, streaming exclusively on Disney+ starting March 1. Watch the new featurette and join Jon Favreau, Dave Filoni, Rick Famuyiwa and others as they explore how “The Mandalorian” and its fan-favorite character Grogu rose to engage the world and win the hearts of viewers across the globe.
The journeys of the Mandalorian through the Star Wars galaxy continue. Once a lone bounty hunter, Din Djarin has reunited with Grogu. Meanwhile, the New Republic struggles to lead the galaxy away from its dark history. The Mandalorian will cross paths with old allies and make new enemies as he and Grogu continue their journey together.
The series stars Pedro Pascal, Katee Sackhoff, Carl Weathers, Amy Sedaris, Emily Swallow and Giancarlo Esposito. The directors of the eight-episode Season 3 include Rick Famuyiwa, Rachel Morrison, Lee Isaac Chung, Carl Weathers, Peter Ramsey and Bryce Dallas Howard.
Jon Favreau is the showrunner/head writer and serves as an executive producer along with Dave Filoni, Rick Famuyiwa, Kathleen Kennedy and Colin Wilson. Karen Gilchrist and Carrie Beck are co-executive producers.
Star Wars will take a new direction with the release of The Bad Batch during its run on Disney+, making history in the process.
Fans recently got their eyes on the first trailer for Season 2 of The Bad Batch thanks to an unexpected post on the main Disney+ website, showing the fandom what Hunter, Wrecker, Omega, and the team will have to face across the galaxy. This season will even include a couple of classic Star Wars clones like Commander Cody from the original trilogy and Captain Rex from The Clone Wars, touching on plenty of Star Wars story threads from the 21st century.
The show is set to arrive on Disney+ shortly after the new year begins, complete with the first two episodes both arriving on the streaming network on January 4.
But while a two-episode premiere is far from uncommon during Disney’s streaming era, The Bad Batch will take a more unique route with the release of later episodes as well…
Boba Fett actor Temuera Morrison wants to bring back the old “badass” side of his Star Wars bounty hunter in the future.
Despite only enjoying a few minutes of screen time in Star Wars’ original trilogy, Boba Fett has always been one of the franchise’s most iconic characters. Recently, the popular bounty hunter was given a new lease of life on Disney+ as Jango Fett actor Temuera Morrison stepped into the role for The Mandalorian Season 2.
Across both his adventures with Din Djarin and his The Book of Boba Fett spin-off, Disney was criticized for not delivering enough of the badassery that the character has long been associated with. And clearly, the actor behind Fett agrees as he has revealed how he wants that to change going forward…
Disney would rather you forget about these undoubted Star Wars flops…

New Star Wars Movies Announced as Disney Enters Agreement to Acquire Lucasfilm Ltd.
October 30, 2012
An exciting new future featuring the continuation of the Star Wars movie saga was announced on October 30, as the Walt Disney Company enters an agreement to acquire Lucasfilm Ltd. from George Lucas. Backed by the global reach and brand stewardship strengths of Disney, the future of Star Wars is now under the direction of acclaimed film producer and studio executive Kathleen Kennedy, co-chairman of Lucasfilm. Kennedy and Disney plan a slate of new Star Wars feature films, beginning with the long-awaited Star Wars: Episode VII, targeted for release in 2015, followed by Episodes VIII and IX. Additional feature films are expected to continue the saga and grow the franchise well into the future.
“For the past 35 years, one of my greatest pleasures has been to see Star Wars passed from one generation to the next,” said George Lucas. “It’s now time for me to pass Star Wars on to a new generation of filmmakers. I’ve always believed that Star Wars could live beyond me, and I thought it was important to set up the transition during my lifetime. I’m confident that with Lucasfilm under the leadership of Kathleen Kennedy, and having a new home within the Disney organization, Star Wars will certainly live on and flourish for many generations to come. Disney’s strength gives Lucasfilm the opportunity to blaze new trails in film, television, interactive media, theme parks, live entertainment, and consumer products.”
The acquisition has Lucasfilm and its creative works and operations enter into Disney’s global portfolio of world-class brands that include Pixar and Marvel. “Lucasfilm reflects the extraordinary passion, vision, and storytelling of its founder, George Lucas,” said Robert A. Iger, chairman and chief executive officer of The Walt Disney Company. “This transaction combines a world-class portfolio of content including Star Wars, one of the greatest family entertainment franchises of all time, with Disney’s unique and unparalleled ability to leverage creativity across multiple platforms, businesses, and markets to generate sustained growth and drive significant long-term value.”
Kathleen Kennedy, current co-chairman of Lucasfilm, will become president of Lucasfilm, reporting to Walt Disney Studios Chairman Alan Horn. Additionally she will serve as the brand manager for Star Wars, working directly with Disney’s global lines of business to build, further integrate, and maximize the value of this global franchise. Kennedy will serve as executive producer on new Star Wars feature films, with George Lucas serving as creative consultant.
The acquisition combines two highly compatible family entertainment brands, and strengthens the long-standing beneficial relationship between them that includes successful integration of Star Wars content into Disney theme parks in Anaheim, Orlando, Paris and Tokyo.
Under the deal, Disney will acquire ownership of Lucasfilm, a leader in entertainment, innovation and technology, and its operating businesses in live action film production, consumer products, videogames, animation, visual effects, and audio postproduction. Disney will also acquire the substantial portfolio of cutting-edge entertainment technologies that have kept audiences enthralled for many years. The present intent is for Lucasfilm employees to remain in their current locations.
The acquisition has been agreed upon by the board of directors of both companies, and is undergoing customary regulatory review and should be complete in the next few months. For further developments on the continuation of the Star Wars saga, including Episode VII, continue checking starwars.com.
This past week, Star Wars fans were treated to not just another episode of Andor on Disney+, but a whole new animated anthology series titled Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi.
A spin-off of Star Wars: The Clone Wars animated series, Tales of the Jedi is a six-episode event with a special focus on Ahsoka Tano and Count Dooku.
While Star Wars fans have seen how The Clone Wars ends, one particular Tales of the Jedi episode revisited a key moment from Anakin’s training of Ahsoka. And in an ironic twist, it featured a grim reminder of another Jedi’s death…
Bryce Dallas Howard has become a mainstay in the Star Wars universe as she continues her impressive career in Hollywood. While she’s best known as an actor for roles in movies like Spider-Man 3, Rocketman, and the Jurassic World trilogy, Lucasfilm has allowed her to expand her resume with credits as a director as the galaxy far, far away moved to Disney+.
Her work on the streaming network has been an overwhelming success for Lucasfilm, starting off with Chapter 4 of The Mandalorian in 2019 as she worked herself into the Star Wars family. She was then brought back to direct Chapter 11 the following year along with an episode of The Book of Boba Fett in 2021, and reports have indicated that she already has more on her plate for the Mandoverse’s future.
And now, Howard also gets the chance to flex her acting chops for the first time with Lucasfilm, as she confirmed in her latest post on social media….

It’s no secret that the lack of Star Wars news to come from either Celebration or the D23 Expo has been a major disappointment. The franchise’s television future on Disney+ is relatively clear for the next few years, though the theatrical waters remain murky. Any anticipation for film announcements has been met with Lucasfilm’s trademark secrecy.
Such a tight-lipped approach at Star Wars Celebration was particularly perplexing, given the nature of the event and the lack of positive motion picture developments in recent years. Much of the studio’s main presentation was spent discussing the Willow series and Indiana Jones 5 – a bonus for fans of those properties, but an irritation for people in Jedi cosplay who payed top dollar to attend.
While a more general presentation at D23 is acceptable and unsurprising, the Star Wars segment of Lucasfilm’s time on stage only provided updates for shows that could be done in tweets. The roof was far from blown off the building, and the Star Wars faithful expected nothing less. As head of the company, Kathleen Kennedy naturally draws the most ire for these lackluster episodes… but it may not entirely be her fault…
In just over two weeks, Lucasfilm Animation will return with a new Star Wars project in Tales of the Jedi. A series of six anthology shorts, Dave Filoni wrote the stories to kill time during flights to Los Angeles for the production of The Mandalorian; with the beautiful animation work being done for The Bad Batch, the Man in the Cowboy Hat had to get his hands on more of that medium himself.
Officially revealed at Star Wars Celebration in May, Tales of the Jedi will dedicate three episodes each to two figures who strayed from the Jedi path: Ahsoka Tano and Count Dooku. A trailer shared at the event and now available to view online features the leads alongside other Star Wars icons, like Anakin Skywalker, Mace Windu, and Darth Sidious.
For a generation of fans, every Saturday morning saw these heroes and villains appear on TV screens in Star Wars: The Clone Wars. While the journeys of Ahsoka and Dooku in that era were largely believed complete, the anthology series will delve into more of what the characters’ lives were like before and after the war. As part of Lucasfilm Animation’s latest effort, an ensemble of voice actors are returning for their roles….
Disney+ has been experiencing incredible success ever since its launch in 2019, and this was mostly due to the influx of content from Star Wars and the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige confirmed that streaming for the studio is “100 percent the future,” which was further proven by the consistent arrival of small screen projects, such as Loki and Moon Knight. However, one discussion point that fans have been talking about is the renewal chances of these shows.
So far, Marvel series like Loki, I Am Groot, and What If…? have received second-season orders while The Mandalorian and Andor have multiple Disney+ slates under their bag, to begin with.
This leads to rampant speculation on whether other shows, such as Ms. Marvel and Moon Knight will receive a Season 2. Some have theorized that they would be canceled in favor of big-screen appearances.
Now, a Disney+ executive has addressed this matter….
The Cinema Behind Star Wars : The Disney Connection
It’s easy to watch Disney films and see the similarities between so many of the motifs of classic storytelling and the hero’s journey that is ever present in the Star Wars films. It’s difficult to pin whether the films and cartoons of Walt Disney directly influenced the creation of Star Wars (with a few notable exceptions), but the style of story and method of storytelling on display is so similar it’s hard not to feel they came from the same school.
Take The Sword in the Stone, for instance. It looks at young Arthur’s journey toward becoming king — with the help of an eccentric wizard that everyone thinks is just a crazy old man. Sound a lot like A New Hope? The entire movie plays like an extended, comedic training sequence of Master and Padawan, right down to the mysticism and hard life lessons. Parallels to Luke’s time on Dagobah in the cave could very easily be drawn to Arthur’s time spent as a squirrel or a fish. He learns hard lessons in a situation he doesn’t completely understand and has to face difficult truths about himself and his life.
Could anyone argue with the parallel between Snow White finding herself pursued by a huntsman in the woods and given refuge by kindly dwarfs, and Princess Leia on Endor, pursued by the Empire’s sinister agents and given refuge by kindly Ewoks?
You would easily be forgiven if you mistook Yoda for a little green man dispensing advice and telling you to trust your feelings that Disney created. His name was Jiminy Cricket.
There are more substantive similarities as well. As the middle act of a mythological story, The Empire Strikes Back has the distinction of being darker in tone, sending our heroes into the dark of the unknown, plunging them into the deepest pits of despair. Who could forget the Millennium Falcon bursting from the jaws of the Space Slug with all the aplomb and cinematic majesty of Geppetto freeing himself of Monstro the whale, one of Disney’s darkest early cartoons?
These parallels are no surprise, though, since the Star Wars films draw so heavily from the classic themes of the mythologies and fables that have permeated the world for as long as we have a history for it.
One of the most striking influences though, and one that I think is a direct and obvious influence, comes from the swashbuckling adventure films that Disney produced in the 1960s. The most prevalent is none other than Swiss Family Robinson, which was directed by a fellow named Ken Annakin.
Yes. You read that right: Annakin.
In any case, Annakin included in this classic film a scene that plays very much like one in A New Hope. Two of the young heroes and a girl in disguise are trudging chest deep in murky water, only to be attacked by a massive snake. Fritz struggles with the beast, dragged under the water repeatedly, shouting for help as his younger brother and the girl look on, shocked. Soon, the other boy (played by Tommy Kirk, a dead ringer for Star Trek’s Wil Wheaton) is embroiled in the battle until the snake just disappears in the water. Many of the shots and even some of the reactions are repeated almost verbatim in the trash compactor sequence on the Death Star.
The Star Wars movies follow the same patterns as all the best Disney films of this type and took so much more from them, even through subconscious inspiration. And the influence flows the other way, too. I could cite many examples of Star Wars, in turn, influencing the cinema of Disney. With Disney and Lucasfilm coming together to give us more Star Wars films, is there a doubt in anyone’s mind that they won’t carry on the same quality of mythological storytelling for years to come? They certainly have a good track record for it.

While the Star Wars sequel trilogy had its moments of greatness, Disney’s additions to the Skywalker Saga left many disappointed with how the 42-year story came to an end. Amongst the biggest complaints were those about Mark Hamill in his return as Luke Skywalker, which left some fans with a sour taste in their mouths as the franchise’s original hero met his unfortunate end.
Even though the trilogy ushered in a new era of stars like Oscar Isaac as Poe Dameron and John Boyega as Finn, Hamill was relatively disconnected from his Star Wars pals, only getting one scene with the late Carrie Fisher’s Leia Organa.
Multiple cast members from the sequel trilogy have shared their disappointment with these missed opportunities, even though Luke has made his presence felt in a more meaningful way through Star Wars’ efforts on Disney+. Now, Hamill himself has offered some new thoughts on the matter, lamenting that Luke didn’t get one reunion that so many were hoping to see in the 21st century….
It’s been three months since Star Wars Celebration, the last time fans received any major updates for the future of the galaxy far, far away. Since then, Obi-Wan Kenobicompleted its limited run on Disney+, and Lucasfilm has turned its focus to its next streaming series, Andor, due in late September.
But the highly-anticipated show won’t be the only thing diehards have to look forward to. In fact, it’s just the beginning.
Disney will be holding the bi-annual D23 Expo convention in two weeks, which promises to bring a slew of information on upcoming Star Wars films, shows, and video games. But directly before the big weekend will be Disney+ Day on September 8, an event commemorating the streaming platform with exclusive reveals and special looks at titles in various stages of development.
Lucasfilm has already announced that Obi-Wan Kenobi: A Jedi Returns – a documentary following the behind-the-scenes process of the latest Star Wars series – will launch on the day. The company has teased special surprises to come throughout the day, a sign that the first wave of Star Wars news in months should precede the larger festivities at D23.
Important to bear in mind is that similar promises were made for the highly hyped event last year, and it wound up being a colossal embarrassment for Lucasfilm. Assuming they’ve learned their lesson from the infamous Disney- Day 2021, Star Wars fans have reason to be excited for the date marked on the Mouse’s calendar.
Any major announcements for new Disney+ shows are likely being reserved for the Hall D23 Presentation, which unfortunately won’t be live-streamed for those at home. Below are five Star Wars streaming projects fans can realistically look to Disney+ Day for updates and release windows….
To steal from the Empire, you just walk in like you belong.

This will be the second Disney Plus Day, following last year’s event that took place on November 12. In the previous edition, Disney Plus premiered multiple projects on the platform, in addition to teasing a lot of the upcoming projects on a Twitter thread. Star Wars was barely mentioned, with Lucasfilm only showcasing a featurette on Obi-WanKenobi that had already been shown to investors 11 months before. Meanwhile, Marvel Studios announced multiple new projects and premiered quick teases for the three shows they planned to release in 2022….
