Lucasfilm Hires Pikachu Writers for Mystery Project

Here’s the latest from: The Direct – Star Wars

A new report seems to suggest that the writers of Detective Pikachu are working on a Star Wars project for Lucasfilm and Disney.

Ever since The Mandalorian, Star Wars content has exploded in the streaming world. While there may not be any recent movies, last year alone was home to three different series on Disney+: The Book of Boba Fett, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Andor.

This year will bring just as many, with several more already in production.

A recent rumor even revealed that yet another spinoff show is in development, hiding under the code name of “Ghost Track 17″—maybe the rumored Ezra Bridger show or even one focused on the villainous Thrawn?

But could the writers for this new show have just been revealed? At the very least, it seems clear that Lucasfilm has indeed hired more talent for its ever-expanding Star Wars Universe…

Lucasfilm Restricted Andor’s Sex & Violence

Here’s the latest from: The Direct – Star Wars

Andor has taken a deeper dive into mature content than previous Star Wars stories, though creator Tony Gilroy was restricted by Lucasfilm in exploring two concepts in-depth onscreen on Disney+.

The series made its intentions clear immediately when Cassian Andor visited a brothel in the opening sequence of the first episode. Intimate relationships between characters have been covered in ways more blunt than anything else Star Wars has ever done, like things getting steamy between Bix and Timm on Ferrix and their bedroom discussion the morning after.

Violence has been fairly on-brand for Star Wars, though Andor doesn’t shy away from taking out many of the good guys, too. Blood in large capacities is seen infrequently in the galaxy far, far away, mostly due to the weapons cauterizing wounds. Cassian and fellow rebels have killed their foes heartlessly, but gore has never been extreme.

For a longtime filmmaker like Gilroy, it was imperative that he have free reign to tell his story as he saw fit. Given the histories Disney and Lucasfilm have in media, the producer was uncertain if a partnership would last. Fortunately, he was afforded full creative freedom, with a request to dial it back on two key elements…

New Star Wars Movies Announced as Disney Enters Agreement to Acquire Lucasfilm Ltd.

October 30, 2012

An exciting new future featuring the continuation of the Star Wars movie saga was announced on October 30, as the Walt Disney Company enters an agreement to acquire Lucasfilm Ltd. from George Lucas. Backed by the global reach and brand stewardship strengths of Disney, the future of Star Wars is now under the direction of acclaimed film producer and studio executive Kathleen Kennedy, co-chairman of Lucasfilm. Kennedy and Disney plan a slate of new Star Wars feature films, beginning with the long-awaited Star Wars: Episode VII, targeted for release in 2015, followed by Episodes VIII and IX. Additional feature films are expected to continue the saga and grow the franchise well into the future.

“For the past 35 years, one of my greatest pleasures has been to see Star Wars passed from one generation to the next,” said George Lucas. “It’s now time for me to pass Star Wars on to a new generation of filmmakers. I’ve always believed that Star Wars could live beyond me, and I thought it was important to set up the transition during my lifetime. I’m confident that with Lucasfilm under the leadership of Kathleen Kennedy, and having a new home within the Disney organization, Star Wars will certainly live on and flourish for many generations to come. Disney’s strength gives Lucasfilm the opportunity to blaze new trails in film, television, interactive media, theme parks, live entertainment, and consumer products.”

The acquisition has Lucasfilm and its creative works and operations enter into Disney’s global portfolio of world-class brands that include Pixar and Marvel. “Lucasfilm reflects the extraordinary passion, vision, and storytelling of its founder, George Lucas,” said Robert A. Iger, chairman and chief executive officer of The Walt Disney Company. “This transaction combines a world-class portfolio of content including Star Wars, one of the greatest family entertainment franchises of all time, with Disney’s unique and unparalleled ability to leverage creativity across multiple platforms, businesses, and markets to generate sustained growth and drive significant long-term value.”

Kathleen Kennedy, current co-chairman of Lucasfilm, will become president of Lucasfilm, reporting to Walt Disney Studios Chairman Alan Horn. Additionally she will serve as the brand manager for Star Wars, working directly with Disney’s global lines of business to build, further integrate, and maximize the value of this global franchise. Kennedy will serve as executive producer on new Star Wars feature films, with George Lucas serving as creative consultant.

The acquisition combines two highly compatible family entertainment brands, and strengthens the long-standing beneficial relationship between them that includes successful integration of Star Wars content into Disney theme parks in Anaheim, Orlando, Paris and Tokyo.

Under the deal, Disney will acquire ownership of Lucasfilm, a leader in entertainment, innovation and technology, and its operating businesses in live action film production, consumer products, videogames, animation, visual effects, and audio postproduction. Disney will also acquire the substantial portfolio of cutting-edge entertainment technologies that have kept audiences enthralled for many years. The present intent is for Lucasfilm employees to remain in their current locations.

The acquisition has been agreed upon by the board of directors of both companies, and is undergoing customary regulatory review and should be complete in the next few months. For further developments on the continuation of the Star Wars saga, including Episode VII, continue checking starwars.com.

Leslye Headland–Helmed Series Has Begun Production in the U.K.

Today, Disney+ announced the cast for “The Acolyte,” an upcoming original Star Wars series from Lucasfilm. Lucasfilm Worried About Next Movie?

Here’s the latest from: The Direct – Star Wars

For the time being, the next Star Wars film is scheduled for a December 2025 theatrical release. The previously slated move, Rogue Squadron, won’t be meeting its 2023 window and has instead been shelved. Given the current trend at Lucasfilm, the odds of a movie being ready in three years’ time almost seems like an impossibility.

It’s been abundantly clear for years that internal turmoil has stalled the film development process for the company since the completion of the sequel trilogy. This was confirmed last week when Lucasfilm SVP Michelle Rejwan was demoted. The producer was tasked with overseeing Rogue Squadron’s development – in addition to other new films – and was relieved of her duties following too many creative difficulties.

Now three years removed from the last silver-screen experience, Star Wars fans are itching to get back into theaters for a journey into the galaxy far, far away. That time is still a few years away, at best, and it’s not one that Lucasfilm is particularly looking forward to. With so much riding on the next theatrical title, Lucasfilm executives are actually worried about the franchise’s next steps…

Lucasfilm Artifact: Defenders of Dynatron City

Lucasfilm Artifact: Defenders of Dynatron City

We’re now just a few short days away from the triumphant return of the The Clone Wars to television as Season Two launches this Friday on the Cartoon Network. But let’s turn the calendar back about 15 years and look at an animated venture that didn’t have the legs to last. We’re not talking Droids or Ewoks, which enjoyed a fair amount of success in the mid-1980s. We’re talking about an artifact largely forgotten from Lucas-lore: a tongue-in-cheek superhero show called The Defenders of Dynatron City.

Thanks to the Internet, the only episode of Defenders of Dynatron City ever produced can still be viewed:

Check out the screen grabs below:

This was back in the day of the early 1990s, when much of the creative activities at Lucasfilm was done under the company umbrella name of LucasArts Entertainment Group. Back then, LucasArts encompassed more than just video games, and Defenders of Dynatron City was seen as a full-fledged entertainment property with real potential. It started life as a game — spawned from the Lucasfilm Games group — but LucasArts positioned it as not only a game, but a comic book and a TV show, a multi-media venture that should sound familiar to seasoned Star Wars fans. Hey, look at some of the familiar names here.

Nowadays, collectors know Howard Roffman to be the President of Lucas Licensing.

Steve Purcell is probably best known as the creator of Sam & Max, Freelance Police. Gary Winnick was co-creator of Maniac Mansion. Older LucasArts games list Cynthia Wuthmann as a Sales Director.

Unlike The Clone Wars, which warranted the creation of an animation studio, the animation for Defenders was done by DIC, the same studio that produced a slew of animated fare in the early ’90s, like C.O.P.S., The Real Ghostbusters, and Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego.

To complete your crash-course in all things Defenders of Dynatron, let’s reprint the one and only article on the subject that appeared in Lucasfilm Fan Club Magazine, back in 1992. By the time that magazine (#12) saw publication, Defenders‘ fate had largely been sealed, and it remains today merely a footnote amid the entertainment ventures explored by Lucasfilm.

Defenders of Dynatron City: Sneak Preview

By John S. Davis

How would you like to have that third arm you’ve always needed? No problem. Just move to Dynatron City where mutation is a way of life. It all began in the early fifties when professor Melvin Myron came to Dynatron City and set up the world’s first atomic-powered soft drink company. Soon, Proto-Cola was born, and the inhabitants of Dynatron City, who love all things new, guzzled it down like crazy.

But was the professor satisfied with this great new hit soft drink? Of course not. As a scientist he wanted to improve his creation. He knew the secret syrup was the key, so he transformed it into something even better — atomic syrup. Proto-Cola was now even better. Yet, Myron wasn’t sure if people would like his new concoction, so he tested it on the lab’s research monkey with amazing results. Almost instantly the monkey could walk and talk and tell jokes. This was the birth of Monkey Kid.

Now the professor thought, “If atomic syrup can turn a monkey into a man, then what will it do to me?” His answer came soon enough, but the change wasn’t what he expected. He thought it would improve him. In reality it exaggerated his grasping and greedy nature and transformed him into the supervillain, Dr. Mayhem.

During Dr. Mayhem’s initial quest to control Dynatron City, the Defenders of Dynatron City are inadvertently born. The Defenders include:

Jet Headstrong — The most stereotypical of the group, Jet is a real truth, justice, mom and apple pie kind of guy. He also uses his head a lot, which can detach from his body and shoot toward his enemies like a bullet.

Buzzsaw Girl — This beautiful blond doesn’t use her head any more than Jet does. Although Buzzsaw Girl doesn’t blow her top as often as Jet, she is, nevertheless, impulsive and quick to jump into a fight. Her large circular saw blade, which takes the place of her legs is both her major weapon and mode of transportation.

Toolbox — In the beginning Toolbox was just that: a toolbox. Now he’s the nuts and bolts man of the Defenders. With his clawhammer head he can shatter just about any substance. A really cool and detached sort of guy.

Ms. Megawatt – This serious-minded woman is the most energetic of the team and the smartest next to Monkey Kid. She’s an expert at electroshock therapy. Just ask anyone who has been on the receiving end of her powerful lightning bolts. She is also able to move at sonic speeds. Whoopi Goldberg is the voice of this Defender.

Radium Dog – Mailmen, beware! This green dog has a fearsome atomic-powered bite. In fact, his head grows as large as his body when he gnaws down on something. Probably the most powerful and dumbest Defender, Radium Dog has an atomic satellite which circles his head that seems to have a mind of its own. At times this satellite darts off-screen where we hear an explosion and see debris fly on-screen. Radium Dog can also fly, but he must dog paddle to remain aloft.

Monkey Kid – The most intelligent of the group, Monkey Kid leads the Defenders in their battles against evil. A case could also be made for Monkey Kid being the missing link between the rest of the group and true intelligence.

And now, Dr. Mayhem’s minions:

An endless supply of sewer monsters and Robot Drone Soldiers. Plus, Dr. Mayhem’s right hand head, Atom Ed The Floating Head. Atom Ed has the psychic power of levitation, and his light bulb eyes fire potent ray beams. He is under Mayhem’s complete control.

Within the context of The Defenders of Dynatron City these somewhat unusual superbeings were created by Mayhem’s atomic syrup, but in reality the genesis for this “Simpsons meet the X-Men” concept came from the mind of Gary Winnick, one of the creative individuals from the Lucasfilm Games division.

“Dynatron City is in this friendly, futuristic outlook of, ‘Mr. Atom is our friend.’ Kind of what people thought in the 1950s. It’s gone off in a parallel direction. It does take place in present day, it’s not taking place in the 1950s. Everybody thought atomic energy was going to be our pal, that’s the direction we take with it. So this atomic powered soft drink ends up causing mutations ,” says Winnick.

But The Defenders of Dynatron City isn’t just a video game, it was considered a full-fledged LucasArts property from the very beginning. LucasArts has already mapped out a plan for this property, and if everything goes according to plan the timeline is as follows:

DECEMBER 1991 – Marvel comics launches The Defenders of Dynatron City as a six issue limited series. If these issues sell well, the comic could continue as a regular series.

FEBRUARY 22, 1992 – Watch the birth of the Defenders in this animated half-hour pilot episode on the Fox Network. Special to be broadcast twice.

FEBRUARY/MARCH 1992 – The Defenders of Dynatron City is released as a Nintendo video game, available for the eight-bit game system.

SPRING 1992 – The Defenders of Dynatron City television special is released on home video.

FALL 1992 – This is a turning point for The Defenders of Dynatron City. If it does well up to this point it could be picked up as a regular series.

SPRING 1993 – A toy line is launched at this time, plus other licensed products are also introduced.

There are many, many groups of superheroes, but none quite like The Defenders of Dynatron City. This group is so unique that it borders on the absurd. Of course, that’s the whole point. The concept is supposed to be played tongue-in-cheek; it’s deliberately poking fun at superheroes. That may be the strength of the property. The humor will either make or break the property. Tune in and judge for yourself.

Lucasfilm Loses Senior Exec

Here’s the latest from: The Direct – Star Wars

Lucasfilm has released a substantial amount of Star Wars series exclusively on Disney+ since The Mandalorian began streaming in 2019. In that time, shows such as The Book of Boba Fett and Obi-Wan Kenobi have seen a massive amount of success on the streaming platform.

In the coming years, the Disney+ release schedule will be even more packed, as nearly a dozen series are confirmed to be released. However, many fans have had complaints about the film side of the franchise, which has been completely bare since 2019’s The Rise of Skywalker.

Disney and Lucasfilm have had plans to keep the galaxy far, far away on the big screen, but that journey has been rocky up to this point.

The first movie to follow the end of the Skywalker Saga was supposed to be Rogue Squadron, which was going to be directed by Patty Jenkins and would’ve released in December 2023. The film was announced all the way back in 2020 but never seemed to have any real developments until it was scrapped from Disney’s release schedule in September.

With the future of Star Wars films still up in the air, a Lucasfilm Senior Executive, Michelle Rejwan, has recently stepped down from her position, adding to the uncertainty that lies ahead….

Lucasfilm Had One Actor In Mind For Acolyte

Here’s the latest from: The Direct – Star Wars

Lucasfilm is currently in development on multiple new Star Wars series for Disney+, including The Acolyte. Coming from executive producer Leslye Headland, The Acolyte is set to explore the waning days of the franchise’s High Republic era as the Dark Side of the Force begins to grow stronger.

Beyond that, not much is known about the streaming show. Its assumed that the Acolyte in the title will refer to a character who follows, or is being taught, the ways of the Sith. This seems especially likely given the sinister-looking red lettering that makes up the series’ logo.

In July, however, fans got that much closer to understanding the scope of the series when Lucasfilm officially announced that The Hunger Games star Amandla Stenberg was boarding the show as its lead actor. And now, it would seem as though the studio’s list of potential stars for The Acolyte wasn’t especially lengthy.

Lucasfilm More Protective of Their Actors

Here’s the latest from: SWNN

John Boyega has stated that Lucasfilm has been supportive of his career after he raised some concerns to the company.

Getting a major role in Star Wars was a dream for Boyega, but as soon as the first trailer for The Force Awakens dropped, the actor became a target of racist online trolling campaigns that the company didn’t know how to deal with. Boyega temporarily left social media due to how he was treated online to focus on his role in the franchise and other acting opportunities. While this hate subsided over time, Boyega felt that his character was sidelined in The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker after being the co-lead for his first film, with Kelly Marie Tran facing similar abuse and a subsequent decrease in prominence. In 2020, he vented his frustrations in an interview with GQ:

“What I would say to Disney is do not bring out a [person of color], market them to be much more important in the franchise than they are and then have them pushed to the side… Like, you guys knew what to do with Daisy Ridley, you knew what to do with Adam Driver. You knew what to do with these other people, but when it came to Kelly Marie Tran, when it came to John Boyega, you know f*** all… They gave all the nuance to Adam Driver, all the nuance to Daisy Ridley. Let’s be honest. Daisy knows this. Adam knows this. Everybody knows. I’m not exposing anything.”

Inside The Lucasfilm Archive: A Brewing Rebellion In The Obi-Wan Kenobi Limited Series

Propmaster Brad Elliott discusses linking Jabba the Hutt to the burgeoning Rebel Alliance in the new limited series.

Through the props and costumes of Star Wars, we find a tangible link to connect with the characters from a galaxy far, far away and the stories they inhabit. Inside the Lucasfilm Archive, take a closer look at these artifacts and the stories behind their design.

Nods to previous Star Wars storytelling are scattered throughout the props utilized in the new Obi-Wan Kenobi limited series, with careful study of prequel pieces informing items pulled directly from Kenobi’s time in the Jedi Order and the circular hilts of the Inquisitor lightsabers making the leap from animation.

But among the items that begin to signal a burgeoning rebellion, it’s surprising to find connections to the crime boss Jabba the Hutt and his Tatooine abode.

Inside The Lucasfilm Archive: An Elegant Weapon

Source: Official Site

Propmaster Brad Elliott shares insights on fabricating Kenobi’s lightsaber and other personal items that link the new series to the prequel trilogy and the film that started it all.
Kristin Baver

Through the props and costumes of Star Wars, we find a tangible link to connect with the characters from a galaxy far, far away and the stories they inhabit. Inside the Lucasfilm Archive, take a closer look at these artifacts and the stories behind their design.

Obi-Wan Kenobi is a man who cannot escape his past.In the Obi-Kenobi limited series, now streaming on Disney+, storytellers explore a previously unseen era in the character’s life — nearly 10 years after the fall of the Jedi with Order 66 but still almost a decade from meeting his fate aboard the Death Star. Behind-the-scenes, the production crew took great pains to find the middle ground between these two known story points when creating the props that would help define the titular character at the midpoint between Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith and Star Wars: A New Hope.

Among Kenobi’s meager belongings when the series opens on Tatooine, we find familiar macrobinoculars, a holoprojector, and a datapad that look almost exactly like screen-used items from the prequel trilogy. “It made sense that Kenobi would take a few items with him to watch over Luke,” Propmaster Brad Elliott tells starwars.com. That includes his lightsaber and other tools of the Jedi that were glimpsed in those earlier films. “The holoprojector would have been something that he would take with him from his belongings on Coruscant.” In this case, the item allowed Bail Organa to reach his old friend with an urgent request and was later broken in the chaos.

Kenobi’s macrobinoculars, first glimpsed in the trailer for the series, were fabricated from a pair intended to appear in Star Wars: Attack of the Clones. Their placement among Obi-Wan’s personal effects is itself a deep cut for fans familiar with a deleted scene showing Kenobi using the same item in Episode II. The prop was original destined for use on Geonosis, but an animated version later showed up in Star Wars: The Clone Wars.

The datapad was an even more obscure recreation, seen only briefly in Revenge of the Sith in the hands of Anakin Skywalker. “He is holding a datapad and mentions that Obi-Wan was there, as if the datapad was the evidence that his master had been to see Padmé and had left it behind,” Elliott says. Visual guides further cemented the idea that the datapad belonged to Skywalker’s master, but “we were the first to actually put it in his hands,” Elliott notes.

An elegant weapon

Even a Jedi in hiding needs their trusty lightsaber.

Kenobi’s elegant and iconic weapon from a more civilized age proved to be the most difficult challenge for the prop builders on the series, Elliott says. Designers on the original trilogy and the prequels had utilized similar but not identical designs to create Obi-Wan’s hilt, meaning that the prop builders on Kenobi were tasked with merging the two iterations into something new that still felt authentic.

“His lightsaber was the trickiest thing that we had to figure out,” Elliott says. “The Revenge of the Sith saber is smaller, shinier, and differs in many other details from the New Hope saber that Alec Guinness carried.

“Kenobi is coming from the loss of the war, the fall of the Jedi Order, and the loss of his best friend and Padawan,” Elliott adds. “He’s carrying the weight of his past, so his saber is largely from that past.”

While the design aesthetic mainly mirrors the prequel hilt previously carried by series star Ewan McGregor, prop makers specifically upgraded the emitter to more closely match Guinness’s original and aged the once pristine handle to make it feel like an artifact that had spent nearly 10 years buried in the desert….
