‘Skeleton Crew’ Set Footage Leaks

The first set footage from Star Wars: Skeleton Crew has managed to leak out, indicating that a speeder bike sequence of some kind will be in the show. Possible spoilers ahead.

Bespin Bulletin has managed to snag some footage from Skeleton Crew from a set built at California State University, Dominguez Hills, which appears to be a rehearsal for a stunt scene that will be filmed at a later point. The stunt in question involves a speeder bike speeding forward before unsuccessfully braking, with the poor driver careening off a cliff. Check out the footage below:…

Pedro Pascal Pitches Hilarious Spin-Off Ideas

Here’s the latest from: The Direct – Star Wars

While Andor may have just started its journey on Disney+, the streaming service will always be synonymous with The Mandalorian. The story of Din Djarin and Grogu has quickly become one of the most popular parts of the entire Star Wars franchise.

Fans have been patiently waiting for the show’s third season to arrive, which is now slated to land at some point in 2023. Though, if the trailer release at D23 is any indication, it’ll be well worth the wait.

The teaser showcases some insane spectacle, including Bo Katan on her new throne, a handful of new Mandalorians, the return of Greef Karga, and Mandalore itself.

While the world lays in wait for the next Mando adventure, the stars of the series have revealed they’re already looking ahead to the future—well, sort of….

John Williams And Bob Iger Made Honorary Knights

Her Royal Highness has made honorary knights of John Williams, who has been with the Star Wars franchise since the very beginning, and Bob Iger, who acquired the franchise as part of his Lucasfilm purchase during his tenure at Disney.

Per The Daily Mail, it was learned that Queen Elizabeth II approved the honors of knighthood to both Williams and Iger some time before she recently passed away at the age of 96. Given that true knighthood is officially reserved for British citizens, neither Williams nor Iger will be able to officially carry the title of “Sir”. Williams and Iger join a list of Americans made honorary knights by the Queen that include the likes of Steven Spielberg, Angelina Jolie, and the late Bob Hope….

Andor Producer Debunks Mando’s Volume Controversy

Here’s the latest from: The Direct – Star Wars

The first three episodes of Star Wars: Andor are now available to the viewing public, letting fans get a peek into Disney and Lucasfilm’s latest adventure as Diego Luna’s Cassian Andor gets his Rogue One prequel story. This also comes as one of the most unique Star Wars entries in some time, as it completed filming without the use of the Volume technology which The Mandalorian made popular.

This tech was used heavily throughout both seasons of The Mandalorian, allowing the actors to come onto a massive set with a near-360-degree screen that let them feel the full environment for which they were shooting. The Volume was later used for Marvel Studios on Thor: Love and Thunder, but even though it has its advantages, it’s caused some controversy amongst fans due to the environments not looking as realistic in the final cut.

Only a few weeks ago, Andor creator/producer Tony Gilroy revealed the fact that his series didn’t use The Volume for any shooting, causing some online controversy due to the fact that the show deviated from what had worked so well in the recent past for Lucasfilm. Now, Gilroy has cleared the air on the matter, explaining why he decided to go old-school and shoot with real-world locations for Andor….

Andor Season 1’s Extreme Death Toll Teased

Here’s the latest from: The Direct – Star Wars

After years of waiting, Andor has finally arrived on Disney+. The Diego Luna-led Star Wars series serves as a prequel to Rogue One, telling the story of its lead character, Cassian Andor, before he becomes the Rebel spy and hero that stole the Death Star plans.

The anticipation surrounding Andor has been sky-high, especially after the overwhelmingly positive reactions that it earned from fans and critics. This comes after the fact that it became apparent that it has a minimal amount of Star Wars Easter eggs, making it stand out from other shows that banked on such references, such as Obi-Wan Kenobi and The Mandalorian.

Now, in celebration of Andor‘s three-episode debut on Disney+, the series’ showrunner has offered some grim insight into what lies ahead for the characters in Season 1 and beyond….

‘Andor’ Season 2 Enlists Ariel Kleiman

As part of a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Andor showrunner Tony Gilroy revealed that Yellowjackets director Ariel Kleiman will be a director on the second season of the new Star Wars series, which will film in the UK between November and August.

When asked if he’ll be directing on season 2, Tony Gilroy said the following:

“I am not. I can’t. This job is just too huge. I don’t have the time to spare. It’s a really poor use of my time. Ari [Ariel] Kleiman is out in Pinewood. I was out there this morning. We start shooting in November. He started prepping three weeks ago. He’s got his hands full out there just to get to November. I have all the rest of the things I have to do. There was some fantasy that I would end up doing the last block, but I just can’t, to be honest with you.”…

Darth Vader’s Iconic Voice Actor to Steps Down

Here’s the latest from: The Direct – Star Wars

Since Star Wars first became a part of pop culture in 1977, James Earl Jones helped push the phenomenon to incredible heights thanks to his portrayal of the Sith Lord, Darth Vader. Although that character has gone through various adaptations and actors over the last 40 years, Jones’ voice is the one content in bringing the cyborg antagonist to life on the big and small screen.

Vader was last seen in this year’s Obi-Wan Kenobi, with a team of actors and stuntmen helping bring the villain back in his battle against Ewan McGregor’s hero. While it allowed Hayden Christensen to return to his iconic role, earning a much better reception than his first go as Anakin Skywalker and Darth Vader, James Earl Jones’ voice was also used through the Respeecher technology that Lucasfilm has employed numerous times on Disney+.

With Jones approaching his 92nd birthday, fans are naturally wondering how long he will continue working in Hollywood, especially with his workload having decreased fairly substantially over the last few years. Now, a new report has revealed that this time for Jones may come sooner than most fans were expecting….

Gilroy Explains Why ‘Andor’ Didn’t Use The Volume

In a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Andor showrunner Tony Gilroy discussed why they ultimately opted not to use the Volume technology for the show, and gave some insight into Luthen Rael, the mysterious character played by Stellan Skarsgård that we were introduced to in the second episode. In this article, we’ve condensed the most interesting parts of the interview, but you may head over to their site if you are interested in reading the entire piece.

When asked if shooting on location was a prerequisite for him when he was brought on board, Gilroy said that it was a decision that they took when they started to plan out the series and hired a production designer:

“When I came on, Sanne Wohlenberg was the producer of record. She came with the existing pieces of the show. So Sanne was there, but I didn’t know her. She had just done Chernobyl, and it was sort of a shotgun marriage. So here we were together, and I had no idea that she was just going to be this rockstar producer.

And so the first decision you have to make is who’s going to be your production designer. Even in writing, my first call is to the production designer, because everything we do has to be designed. So we put a marker down. It was kind of a test for Disney: ‘How serious are you?’ We didn’t want to go with any of the traditional Star Wars people. We wanted [production designer] Luke Hull, who was like 12 years old and had just done Chernobyl. He’s just a fricking genius, but non-Star Wars in every way. So we brought him over. As I was doing the [series] bible, I wrote the first three episodes as a sort of a test….

Review: ‘Andor’ Episodes 1-3

In their marketing campaign for the latest Star Wars live-action series, Andor, Lucasfilm and the cast and crew behind the project tried to stress a handful of things to the public. Perhaps the most important one is that this is no regular Star Wars series — it is as close to an HBO drama as Star Wars can get, with no Jedi or lightsabers around. Tony Gilroy, the showrunner, head writer, and executive producer on the series, is famously not a Star Wars fanatic (something that was definitely interesting in some aspects, as I’ll discuss later), and was drawn to the project because of the character drama that he found behind it, as well as the scope that he would be able to achieve with the backing of a huge machine like Disney and Lucasfilm’s.

Diego Luna, who plays 21-year-old, future Rebel spy Cassian Andor, was immediately sold on Gilroy’s pitch, as the writer wanted to test the limits of what Lucasfilm would be willing to do with Star Wars. Right off the bat, he announces to the audience that he wasn’t kidding with all of his talk, when Cassian Andor walks into a brothel in the very first scene of the show. While it certainly isn’t the first time sex is alluded to in Star Wars, Andor got quite explicit in the first two episodes, both in this scene and when Adria Arjona’s Bix visits his booty call late at night in the second episode.

It’s clear from the very beginning that Gilroy doesn’t care about pleasing a fanbase or checking the classic Star Wars boxes that creators like Dave Filoni or Jon Favreau would. And that is not a burn on them either, it’s just a different piece of content, and something Star Wars should be grateful for. Gilroy also doesn’t care about keeping awake those who set their alarms at 3am to watch the new Star Wars episode by throwing flashy action sequences in their faces. He builds his story through dialogue and character conflict, and through careful setup in the first two episodes, he finally delivers a grand spectacle in the third. But we’ll get to that….

Why Disney+’s Andor Is The Best Star Wars Show Yet

Here’s the latest from: The Direct – Star Wars

Star Wars has been bringing a broad range of content to Disney+ from the anime anthology of Visions to the blockbuster event of The Mandalorian. Now, the galaxy far, far away has something new to offer with Andor, a spy thriller starring Diego Luna’s Rogue One rebel.

As most will be aware, Cassian Andor, unfortunately, met his demise by the end of Rogue One with the Empire’s destruction of Scariff in his efforts to retrieve the plans for the Death Star. But Andor will jump back five years before his death to explore his early days as a rebel spy.

Ahead of the premiere of the 12-episode first season on Wednesday, September 21, Andor has already been picked up for Season 2 which will lead directly up to Rogue One, ultimately telling the whole story of Cassian’s rebel journey.

Clearly, Lucasfilm is going all-in on Andor and creator Tony Gilroy’s vision for a spy thriller in the Star Wars galaxy. But are the early episodes even worth watching? The Direct got the opportunity to preview the first four episodes of Andor, and here’s why it’s worth the watch….

Andor S2 Gets Release Update

Here’s the latest from: The Direct – Star Wars

The first season of the latest Star Wars streaming series, Andor, is very fast approaching. Arriving this week, the show stars Diego Luna as the Rebel Alliance captain and centers on how he became the man audiences met in 2016’s Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.

Of course, Season 1 of Andor is only one side of the coin. A Season 2 has indeed already been greenlit by Lucasfilm and Disney, although details on that second round of episodes remain under wraps.

The second half of Season 1 will feature a series of time jumps that occur every few episodes which will lead viewers straight into the story of Rogue One. But when exactly will Season 2 arrive on Disney+? Showrunner Tony Gilroy responded with a potential timeframe….

Kenobi: Deleted Jedi Cameo In New Art

Here’s the latest from: The Direct – Star Wars

Lucasfilm’s recently-completed Disney+ show Obi-Wan Kenobi saw the titular Jedi Master become entangled in a rescue mission that he didn’t want to participate in. However, it’s through this adventure that he rediscovered his connection to the Force and forged a bond with Princess Leia in the years before A New Hope.

Those who watched the series will know that Leia was kidnapped by the Empire midway through and taken to Fortress Inquisitorius. Kenobi, of course, had to come to the princess’ rescue and infiltrate the fortress.

As he roamed the lower depths of the structure, Obi-Wan ended up coming across a ghastly sight: a series of tombs for dead Jedi. Among the deceased Force-wielders were some familiar faces from other Star Wars projects, and it seems like not everyone made it into the scene…

‘Andor’: Length Of The Series

In a recent interview with ABC’s On the Red Carpet, Andor showrunner Tony Gilroy and actors Kyle Soller and Denise Gough have weighed in on how long a Star Wars series should be.

Gilroy took the occasion to highlight, yet again, why he’s so thankful for this opportunity — it’s not because he’s a Star Wars fan that has always wanted to play in this sandbox, but because he’s an immensely talented creator who was looking for a major platform to tell the story he wants with next to no limitations, and not just in terms of budget.

He said the following…

‘Rogue Squadron’ Removed From Disney’s Schedule

Star Wars: Rogue Squadron will not be taking flight on December 22, 2023 as previously planned, as the film is no longer on Disney’s official release schedule. While many expected this based on credible rumblings and the fact that it didn’t enter production, it has only now been removed from the release schedule. Here are the details.

Variety broke the news that Disney has opted to remove the film, which had already had its production start indefinitely delayed, from its current release schedule. Given that the film needed to start moving forward, as a major film requires months of pre-production, months to shoot, and months to complete in post-production, it was clear that the film was not making a Christmas 2023 release date. With radio silence on the film for months, it was obvious that the studio was going to put the project on the shelf, at least for a while.

Rogue Squadron was initially described as a tale that would “move the saga into the future era” of the galaxy far, far away when it was formally announced at the end of 2020, with the film set to be first Star Wars film that would hit theaters after The Rise of Skywalker in 2019, at the helm of Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins with a script by Matthew Robinson. However, it was rumored that there were issues not only with the director’s schedule (even though she opted to hand the director’s chair for Cleopatra over to someone else while remaining on as a producer for that film), but various unspecified behind-the-scenes issues with development. It currently appears that Jenkins is focused on her work on a third Wonder Woman movie, meaning that if Rogue Squadron is still a project Lucasfilm is moving forward with, it will either be with another creative team, or we’ll be in for a long wait for Jenkins to return….

Brie Larson Looks Adorable Meeting Harrison Ford

Here’s the latest from: The Direct – Star Wars

D23 not only serves as an exciting event where a lucky bunch of fans gets sneak peeks at Disney’s latest blockbusters like The Marvels, but it is also a great place for Hollywood’s best and brightest to bump shoulders and shake hands.

For some veterans of celebrity life, events like these are old hat. Just something that comes with the territory of being a world-renowned actor for others, it is the exact opposite. One example of this is Ms. Marvel‘s Iman Vellani, who comes in as not only one of the MCU’s newest stars, but as an actor who’s still quite new to the industry as a whole.

The MCU super-fan turned Marvel superhero, just got to experience her first D23 since her Disney+ series shot her into superstardom, which meant she – along with her The Marvels costars – got to share in conversation with some of the biggest names in all of movies.

But it was one meeting from the event between Vellani, Brie Larson, and Star Wars mainstay Harrison Ford that broke the internet….

Pedro Reignites Mando Movie Possibilities

Here’s the latest from: The Direct – Star Wars

Even though Star Wars Celebration and the 2022 D23 Expo have both come and gone, Star Wars still have no answers as to when that galaxy far, far away will return to the big screen.

While movies helmed by Kevin Feige, Taika Waititi, and Rian Johnson are supposedly still in the works, current Star Wars storytelling appears to be on Disney+ with Andor, The Mandalorian, and Ahsoka set to take center stage in the coming weeks and into 2023.

Of the three live-action series, the ongoing story that Star Wars films once offered exists in The Mandalorian and will continue in Ahsoka, both of which are overseen by Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni.

Since Lucasfilm has yet to fill Star Wars’ absence at the box office, some are now wondering if Mando’s destiny extends beyond Disney+ and possibly theaters.

When Fandango asked both Rick Famuyiwa and series star, Pedro Pascal, about possibly ending The Mandalorian with a film, the director played it safe while Pascal acknowledged it as “a great idea.”

Rumor: Eman Esfandi To Play Ezra In ‘Ahsoka’

A new report by Cinelinx is saying Eman Esfandi, from King Richard and an upcoming film The Inspection, will be playing Ezra Bridger in live-action, in the upcoming Ahsoka series. Filming has been going on since May 9 and will continue for a couple more months in the Volume at Manhattan Beach Studios as well as the trainyard at El Segundo, in Los Angeles.

The search for Ezra has been one of the most discussed Star Wars-related topics of the past couple of years, both on- and off-screen. After Chapter 13 of The Mandalorian set up the Ahsoka spin-off show, when Rosario Dawson’s version of the character name-dropped Grand Admiral Thrawn, it became clear the storyline would follow up on the events of the Star Wars: Rebels finale. During Star Wars Celebration this year, Dave Filoni strongly hinted that the Ghost crew would be reuniting in the series, but there hasn’t been a lot of news regarding Ezra and Thrawn….

Disney’s Next Star Wars Movie Gets Delayed

Here’s the latest from: The Direct – Star Wars

Disney+ has allowed the Star Wars galaxy to expand more rapidly than ever, even through the struggles of the pandemic. Between more stories with fan-favorite characters, new forms of storytelling, and a whole new era of the franchise, Star Wars has grown on Disney+, but what happened to the theatrical blockbusters?

Although Star Wars currently has movies in the works from Taika Waititi, Kevin Feige, Rian Johnson, and more legendary creatives, progress has proven slow. Only Patty Jenkins’ Rogue Squadron has been formally revealed for a December 2023 release, with comments indicating Waititi’s movie might arrive first.

Amid the mess of Star Wars’ theatrical future, a new report surfaced that may reveal things have gotten even worse as the wait continues for the franchise’s first movie since 2019’s The Rise of Skywalker….

Rumor: No New Movie Before 2024 At D23

The Star Wars film hiatus after The Rise of Skywalker is set to continue for at least one year longer than initially anticipated.

After the underperformance of Solo: A Star Wars Story, Lucasfilm hit the pause button on Star Wars films ahead of the ninth Skywalker Saga episode to reassess the situation. Some projects have remained in limbo, such as a potential trilogy of films written and directed by The Last Jedi writer/director Rian Johnson (who has opted instead to focus on making sequels to his whodunit mystery film Knives Out), and a Rogue Squadron adaptation by Patty Jenkins (who has seemingly put the project on pause in favor of working on a third Wonder Woman film, which is expected to be her last). Other projects have been reworked into television series, with planned spin-offs for Ewan McGregor’s Obi-Wan Kenobi and Temuera Morrison’s Boba Fett being turned into limited series with potential for more. There have been a number of films that have been placed into the pipeline with no word on whether or not they’ll move forward, such as Taika Waititi’s film (which may film as soon as early next year), and with Damon Lindelof speculated to be writing a Star Wars movie script right now.

Unfortunately, it seems like we’ll have to wait a bit longer to get news on the theatrical front. A recent report from the Puck News newsletter (run by former THR editor Matt Belloni) talked about what to expect at Disney D23 ahead of the opening Friday, and the picture painted says that Lucasfilm want to keep their cards to their vest until they’re completely confident in where to take the franchise next on a theatrical front. In short, don’t expect a new Star Wars movie to come out until 2024 or later. Check out a screencap of the newsletter below…
