How ILM Put “the Empire” in Empire State Building

Here’s the latest from: StarWars.Com

Move over, King Kong. Last night, it was Star Wars’ turn to take over the world-famous skyscraper

By Dan Brooks

With all that happens in New York City, it can be hard to impress residents of the Big Apple. (I should know — I’m a native.) But last night, passersby in Midtown might’ve been surprised by what they saw if they looked up: X-wings, TIE fighters, and more from the Star Wars galaxy, all traveling across the Empire State Building.

As part of Lucasfilm’s month-long “Imperial March” consumer products campaign, and starting the “March to May the 4th,” the iconic New York skyscraper hosted a dynamic light show, which saw classic Star Wars moments and new visual effects featured on the 1930 building’s beautiful Art Deco facade. The 5-minute sequence was created by Industrial Light & Magic, Lucasfilm’s visual effects house; for all of ILM’s legendary work, this was a project like no other…

The road to the Clone Wars began decades earlier with the Free Trade Zones or FTZs, the failures of Chancellor Valorum, exploits of the Trade Federation and Darth Plagueis, and see how the members would all join up to form the eventual CIS, and shape what we see in the Andor show.

How Kino Loy Saved the Galaxy

Kino Loy has very quickly become a fan favorite character. He is one of mine as well. His journey through the prison arc was powerful and tragic. Similar to the video I did about Nemik, I wanted to take some time to analyze his character arc and transformation to see how Cassian’s interactions with the man helped him become the hero that we see in Rogue One.

How Disney Channel Caused Some Backlash In The Early Days Of Ahsoka

Here’s the latest from /Film

Today, Ashley Eckstein is known for voicing one of the most popular “Star Wars” characters of the 21st century: Ahsoka Tano. The performer, who has won praise and recognition for her turn as the Togruta Jedi turned Rebel, surprised audiences when she made her debut in “Star Wars: The Clone Wars.” She quickly proved herself capable of not just kicking major butt in the “Star Wars” universe but also of being great enough to slip into existing canon without alienating picky fans of the original and prequel trilogies.

Since Ahsoka’s introduction, she’s become a massively popular character, starring in “Star Wars Rebels” and “Tales of the Jedi” and making the leap to live action, with Rosario Dawson putting on the head tails to embody the character. Ahsoka wasn’t always embraced by “Star Wars” fans, though…

How the ILM Model Shop Brought Ahsoka’s T-6 Jedi Shuttle to Life

Here’s the latest from: StarWars.Com

Industrial Light & Magic model maker John Goodson gives us a closer look at the complexities at work in the tiny craft fabricated for Ahsoka’s Jedi shuttle on Ahsoka.

There was something strikingly familiar about Ahsoka Tano’s Jedi shuttle, the T-6 1974. “I already know this ship,” model maker John Goodson thought as he set to work building the craft that would transport Tano and Professor Huyang on their first live-action adventure in Ahsoka, now on Disney+.

However, the physical creation of Tano’s shuttle was its own journey, bringing the unique mode of transportation first created for the Jedi of the prequels and Star Wars: The Clone Wars back to the screen with a painstakingly crafted and intricately mechanized model….

What Are the Whills? (How to Watch Star Wars: Part 1.1)

Check out Part 1.1 of What Are The Whills (How to Watch Star Wars: Part 1.1)

17 Oct 2021
For those of you waiting for Part Two of “How to Watch Star Wars”… This is that, but it’s not the video about the Special Editions. Before I get to that, I wanted to expand on some things from my first “How to Watch Star Wars” video, and also include some new information that’s come to light since then. The issues I address in this video about the Whills are, I think, the most important unanswered questions in Star Wars, and I really needed to clarify all of this for what I say in the next videos to make the most sense. So I’m calling this Part 1.1, because it’s kind of a continuation of the first video, instead of what I planned for Part Two. But I think it’s interesting and important to the series, so I hope you enjoy! (And Part Two is coming soon… thanks to everybody who has stuck around and waited!)

Check out Part Two of How to Watch Star Wars, Part Two: The Special Editions Are the Movies, Get Over It

9 May 2022

When I said Part Two was “coming soon,” I didn’t think that would mean three years, but better late than never right?

Hopefully it’s worth the wait for the people who have been asking for this. I think it’s the most comprehensive video that’s been made about the changes to the different versions of the Star Wars movies, and also a discussion about how and why the changes exist and why some of them are controversial, and a discussion about film preservation in general and why art changes over time. It’s divided into three parts so you can watch it episodically if you want, but I didn’t want to post it as three separate videos because it’s all interrelated.

Thanks for watching, and check back soon (sooner than three years) for Part Three!

7 Sept 2019
Well here it is, the Star Wars video essay I’ve been working on all year!

It’s twenty years of stray observations about the films and especially the prequels which should be interesting to people, and a rebuttal to Red Letter Media and all those other terrible YouTube reviews, hopefully combined into an interesting essay.

Being me, it talks a lot about Bob Dylan and Kubrick and all those other guys I’m always on about, and I could have cut it down or cut it up into separate videos, but in the end I didn’t want to. It all ties together, and I think it’s interesting.

For all the people over the years who ask why I like the Star Wars prequels so much and I’ve said it’s a complicated subject that takes a long time to get into, well, it looks like 2 hours and 20 minutes is about how long it takes to get into, and here’s your answer!

How Omega’s Journey Connects with the Bad Batch and Viewers

Here’s the latest from: StarWars.Com

Star Wars: The Bad Batch brought back Clone Force 99, an elite group of clone troopers who were genetically modified to have a unique set of skills. The first season put us right into the very early days of the Empire and the immediate galactic changes occurring alongside the members of the Bad Batch in Hunter, Wrecker, Tech, Crosshair, and Echo.

But one unexpected addition to the group was Omega, a young clone who served as a medical assistant on Kamino. From her first introduction to the Bad Batch, Omega is set apart from the other clones in a number of ways — all of which help make her a truly unique addition to the Star Wars galaxy.

Spoiler warning: The following article contains plot points and story details from Star Wars: The Bad Batch Season 1 and Season 2 on Disney+…

How Omega is Teaching the Bad Batch to be More Well Rounded

Hunter, Echo, Tech, and Wrecker have all been teaching and protecting Omega since she joined their family in the very first episode of The Bad Batch. But the season two premiere has also made it clear that she has been teaching each of them as well, making them more well rounded individuals as well.

How Britell Created New Sounds For Andor

Here’s the latest from: StarWars.Com

Britell talks with StarWars.com about his Andor score — and his old hip-hop band.
Dan Brooks

Andor is a decidedly new take on Star Wars, and the same can be said of its music. Nicholas Britell, an Academy Award-nominated and Emmy Award-winning composer whose previous work includes the TV series Succession (2018-present), Moonlight (2016), and the The Big Short (2015), has created a score that’s less space-swashbuckling, more space-spy, for the story of Cassian Andor. Strings drone for stretches, low-volume beats remind us of ever-constant tension, and even when something good happens, dissonant tones seem to bring us back to earth. To mark today’s release of the Andor: Vol. 1 soundtrack, StarWars.com spoke with Britell about the music of the series, discussing his approach to a darker vibe, using non-traditional instrumentation, and his college hip-hop band….

How Andor’ Will Break Season 1’s Formula

Here’s the latest from: The Direct – Star Wars

With half of the first season available to the world, Andor has quickly become one of the most pleasant Star Wars surprises. Lauded by fans for its mature approach and exceptional writing, Tony Gilroy’s series is setting the bar higher for all live-action content to come.

Part of the show’s appeal has been the breaking of new ground with the exploration of various original characters, made possible by a familiar story structure. Fans of The Clone Wars are well accustomed to the arc formula, which devoted three or four episodes to tell a larger, interconnected narrative. Andor has done so similarly, having focused the first three episodes on Ferrix and the subsequent arc on the Aldhani heist.

It’s a format that’s largely here to stay – particularly with Season 2, which will devote an arc per year in the Star Wars timeline leading directly into Rogue One. But there will be a slight shake-up before this approach becomes permanent. While discussing the remainder of the series, Gilroy indicated that the forthcoming episode will stand on its own….
