How Tippett Studio created the terrifying trash crab from the latest episode of the Disney+ series.

On the beaches of Lanupa, Wim and KB encounter a terrifying creature who may just see the lost children of At Attin as more food than friend. To create Star Wars: Skeleton Crew’s lumbering mother crab, a massive version of the seemingly harmless hermit crab-like creatures the pair followed skittering across the sands, series co-creators Jon Watts and Chris Ford called upon Tippett Studio to design, build, and animate the stop-motion puppet in their Berkeley, California studio.
The studio was founded by legendary animator and creature creator Phil Tippett, who led the innovative animation techniques for the tauntauns and AT-AT walkers of Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back and sculpted several of the aliens, including Max Rebo, populating Jabba’s Palace as the head of the creature department for Star Wars: Return of the Jedi. In recent years, the Tippett Studio has been called in to recreate Tippett’s stop-motion dejarik chess set from Star Wars: A New Hope for three recent Star Wars films — The Force Awakens, Solo: A Star Wars Story, and The Rise of Skywalker — and create new stop-motion masterpieces for The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett. For Skeleton Crew, the Mama Crab puppet, lovingly nicknamed Tet’niss, would become the studio’s heaviest creation to date….

The familiar chime of the Star Tours interstellar spaceline, the wet squelching of a Hutt luxuriating in a mud bath, and the ferocious snarl of the wolf-like Captain Brutus are just some of the (occasionally disgusting) sounds featured in Star Wars: Skeleton Crew. These intricate details were all meticulously engineered by a team of audiophiles at Skywalker Sound, led by supervising sound editor Matthew Wood and sound designer David W. Collins.
Both long-standing stewards of the soundscapes of the saga, Wood and Collins recently sat down with StarWars.com to take a sonically spoiler-filled look at the first half of the Skeleton Crew journey — a bounty of Easter eggs, behind-the-scenes tidbits, and more….
Our opinion on Jod Na Nawood (Jude Law) is about as easy to pin down as the man himself (and it’s not just because he has more aliases than Ezra Bridger). One minute it seems like the gruff exterior is just a façade, the next he’s literally holding a dagger to a kid’s throat. But we suppose it’s a helpful lesson for Captain Fern (Ryan Kiera Armstrong) and her crew: it’s probably best to sleep with one eye open while Na Nawood is around.
Our crew has just learned that the bucket of bolts that carried them away from At Attin is none other than the storied Onyx Cinder, the vessel once owned by dread pirate Captain Tak Rennod. Jod is thrilled to discover they’re on the legendary pirate captain’s old ship, but the journey has started to take its toll on the rest of the group — especially Wim (Ravi Cabot-Conyers). He just wants to get home! SM-33 reveals he doesn’t remember At Attin’s location, but Captain Rennod kept a record of the coordinates at his secret lair beneath Skull Ridge Mountain and Fern orders him to take them there….

It took the latest technology, a veteran special effects squad, an entire team of incredible performers, and one very dedicated young actor. But would you have ever guessed that the timeless proverb applies to droids as well?
Star Wars: Skeleton Crew, which recently debuted on Disney+, introduces a slew of brand-new characters who have already earned legions of fans. (Neel Nation, we see you.) “For Skeleton Crew there were more characters than we’ve built on any other season before,” says Legacy Effects co-founder J. Alan Scott, whose company fabricated Grogu for The Mandalorian and brought Professor Huyang and Murley the Loth-cat to life for Ahsoka among others. For the latest series, Legacy Effects once again made a mix of never-before-seen creatures and droids crafted by Doug Chiang and his production design team, like Neel and the unforgettable Kh’ymm, as well as more familiar aliens first glimpsed in other much-loved Star Wars stories. …

We’ve loved Neel (Robert Timothy Smith) from the first moment we laid eyes on that carefully combed blue hair and his adorable snout. But this week our adoration was cemented by his kindness and bravery in the face of life-threatening dangers.
Using the coordinates from Kh’ymm’s observatory, our crew travels to a planet that looks much like At Attin, but reveals itself to be a far different kind of place. The air is filled with ashy smoke, so thick Jod can taste it when he steps outside. Buildings are bombed-out shells with trees growing through them, evidence of a conflict that’s been raging for a very long time. The kids leave Jod (Jude Law) with the ship and go in search of directions. They soon meet Hayna, a capable young warrior from the Troik clan and the daughter of its leader, General Strix….

The very idea of Star Wars: Skeleton Crew — an adventure told from the perspective of four young travelers seeing the wider world for the first time — invites the design of new worlds in rich color palettes, transfixing the characters and fans at home with all the splendor and danger the galaxy far, far away has to offer.
Behind the scenes, co-production designers Doug Chiang and Oliver Scholl tackled the job with more than half a century of filmmaking experience between them. “One of the joys of working with Oli is that it’s a terrific collaboration, because he brings a very distinct perspective to it,” says Chiang, Lucasfilm’s Senior Vice President and Executive Design Director. “I love those kinds of collaborations because we get fresh ideas. He may suggest something that I hadn’t thought of before, and it’s a terrific way of world building. It feels more authentic, and I think that’s one of the things that’s so important for Star Wars, is that we want this to feel authentic.” …

Law joins fellow Star Wars stars Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Harrison Ford, and Ewan McGregor, and The Mandalorian creator Jon Favreau as honorees on the world-famous Walk of Fame. When Star Wars: Skeleton Crew co-creators Jon Watts and Chris Ford set out to put together their crew of young stars, they knew each actor would have to bring a unique set of skills to the ensemble.
For Wim, they cast Ravi Cabot-Conyers, who brought energy and heart to Antonio Madrigal in Walt Disney Animation Studios’ Academy Award-winning film Encanto. In the Star Wars galaxy, Cabot-Conyers imbues his character with wide-eyed wonder and a love for adventure.
They found their Fern in Ryan Kiera Armstrong, who started acting at the age of six and has been cast in several feature films as well as the first lead young actor in the FX series American Horror Story as Alma Gardner, which earned her an Emmy nomination. As Fern, Armstrong brings a maturity to the group of young adventurers, with a wisdom beyond her years….
Shouldn’t Star Wars be, like, you know, for kids? That’s clearly the assumption behind the latest Disney spin-off, which differs from most of the other offshoots in aiming squarely at the very, very little ones. ‘Isn’t it wizard!?’ exclaims one of the moppets featured in Star Wars; Skeleton Crew, the first two episodes of which have just dropped on the Disney+ streamer worldwide. Hopefully this will be a wizard experience for nippers, but aiming low was what brought the hallowed text of Star Wars to the lows of the Ewoks and The Phantom Menace, so anyone aged over double figures will want to tread carefully…..

Nick Frost’s love for Star Wars began long before he was cast as the voice of SM-33, a rusty pirate droid with a few wires loose.
In the summer of 1977, Frost and his cousin spent their weekends perusing the toy shelves of a local store in their Welsh village having just discovered the galaxy far, far away. “My auntie Sandra would take me and my cousin to a little shop where they sold Star Wars figures and on Saturdays, we were allowed to buy one figure each,” Frost recalls. “That was our life — and not just for a summer. I mean, [Star Wars] was just my whole life for 10 years. Even now, I still feel exactly the same way. Certain pieces of music take me back in time and I know that picture of Luke Skywalker in front of the twin suns as well as I know photographs of my family. It is ingrained in me.”

Star Wars: Visions is returning to its anime roots with nine new shorts slated for release next year.
At the 2024 Disney APAC Content Showcase, it was exclusively revealed that Star Wars: Visions will debut a third volume in 2025.
The award-winning series first premiered in 2021, with nine shorts by seven different Japanese anime studios celebrating the mythology of Star Wars through unique cultural perspectives. Last year’s second volume took the imaginative series on a global tour, featuring animation from across Japan, India, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Spain, Chile, France, South Africa, South Korea, and the United States….

As a kid, pretending to act out Star Wars adventures in his backyard or on the school playground, Jude Law gravitated toward the role of Han Solo. “There was a sort of shrug to Han Solo that I always loved, a slight cynicism,” he tells StarWars.com. So, it’s no surprise that as he enters the galaxy as Jod Na Nawood in Star Wars: Skeleton Crew, he’s bringing some of that same swagger and charm to the role coupled with inspiration from another original trilogy icon: Luke Skywalker. “There was an obvious purity to Skywalker,” he adds. “I really wanted to try and combine all those things.”

As a kid whose life was profoundly changed by Star Wars in theaters in 1977, the anticipation for the Star Wars Holiday Special on television the following year was high. It’s hard to imagine there was a time when there was very little Star Wars content available to us, but no one anticipated the unprecedented success and impact of Star Wars, and we were starved for that content in the early years. We got some of that fix through the Marvel Comics series, but the three year wait for the next movie seemed like an eternity. So the announcement of a live action television program that continued the story and included all the main actors was something to look forward to. I was glued to the television for every second of the broadcast, and even some of the commercials were entertaining, such as the Kenner commercial with C-3PO and R2-D2….
Life Day — that Wookiee holiday season tradition that for decades primarily existed in the hearts of Star Wars fans — has in recent years attracted a bit of mainstream curiosity and adoration. This is thanks in large part to new merchandise, books, and media celebrating the holiday, which was first introduced when The Star Wars Holiday Special aired on November 17, 1978.
Since 2021, fans have counted on new Life Day merchandise to appear in U.S. Disney Parks in November, and Life Day-themed books and comics hitting store shelves around the same time. The holiday has also been featured in Star Wars: Young Jedi Adventures, The LEGO Star Wars Holiday Special, and a Life Day Star Wars Lofi that can set the mood for any celebration hosted at home…
The son of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story composer Michael Giacchino brings his own vision to the score of the next Disney+ Star Wars series.

When composer Mick Giacchino first got the call to write the score for Star Wars: Skeleton Crew, the new live-action series debuting on Disney+ December 3, it was a pinch-me moment to work on a franchise he’s loved since childhood. “I wanted to ensure that this was a show where you get to really put yourself in these characters’ shoes because most of us grew up with Star Wars and our dreams were to be those kids and blast off on some adventure,” he tells StarWars.com. “I’m still pinching myself about it. It’s so exciting!”
One of the only people he told, prior to this announcement, was his father. Acclaimed composer Michael Giacchino had worked with series creators Jon Watts and Chris Ford on the Spider-Man franchise as well as scoring Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, so he had some sound advice from his own experience. “From the beginning, he said, essentially, ‘Just remember to have fun with it,’ especially given the nature of the show. He was very supportive,” Mick recalls….

At the first D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event in Brasil today, the groundmech rolled onstage and spoke Portuguese during the Showcase Panel segment announcing that Andor: A Star Wars Story Season 2 will premiere April 22, 2025, with a new logo for the ongoing series.
While Season 1 followed a year in Cassian Andor’s life set about five years before the events of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, the forthcoming episodes will bridge the remaining gap. Covering four years told in three-episode arcs, Andor Season 2 follows Cassian as he evolves into a leader for the emerging Rebel Alliance. Cassian may have been a reluctant hero before, but the Andor we’ll meet next year is fueled by a higher purpose in the fight for freedom against the Empire….

Seeking advice on casting his squad of young actors for Star Wars: Skeleton Crew, creator Jon Watts looked to the longtime film and television director who had brought together The Goonies: the late Richard Donner.
It was just a few weeks before Donner passed in 2021. “And he said the smartest thing, which was when you’re looking at a 10-year-old kid, you’re not [just] casting an actor to play a role,” Watts recalls. “You’re looking for someone that embodies the spirit of the character. So that’s what was always in the back of my mind.”
The story of Skeleton Crew, set in the era of the New Republic, carries forward much of the same heart and sense of adventure inherent in The Goonies and other stories of the era, including the classic LucasArts game Monkey Island, Amblin Entertainment’s E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, and Lucasfilm’s Indiana Jones franchise. “It’s the story of kids who happen to live on what they think of as a boring planet,” says series co-creator Chris Ford. But as they go on this adventure, finding their way back quickly becomes complicated. “Unfortunately, along the way they attract the attention of a bunch of pirates and other space criminals.”…
Concept and storyboard artist Iain McCaig was among the first to join Episode I’s art department and played a central role in designing many iconic characters.

In 1995, Star Wars: The Phantom Menace(1999) was still two years from starting principal photography and four years from release, but Lucasfilm’s art department at Skywalker Ranch was well underway creating designs and concepts for the innumerable characters, locations, and vehicles in the film. This included a new villain: Darth Maul.
“George [Lucas] just came up and said, ‘Darth Maul, he’s our new Sith Lord,’ and he walked away,” recalls artist Iain McCaig, who by that point had been working primarily on hero characters. “I didn’t know if Maul was male or female, an alien, anything. It freaked me out at the beginning that I didn’t get much direction. Then I realized that maybe he picked me because he liked my work and wanted me to show him what I thought a Darth Maul might look like. George clearly enjoys reacting to visuals. One of his many skills is that he can look at fifty things, make choices, move things around, take a head from this character and put it on the body of that one over there, and suddenly, it’s Star Wars. We learned to trust him and also to trust ourselves.”…
