15 Highlights From Star Wars: Tales Of The Jedi

Here’s the latest from: StarWars.Com

Spoiler warning: This article contains story details and plot points from each installment of Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi.

Now streaming on Disney+, Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi is a six-part anthology of animated shorts, diving into never-before-seen, pivotal moments for both Ahsoka Tano and Count Dooku. Both of these fan-favorite characters left the Jedi Order on their own accord, but both of their stories take vastly different turns.

Three of these episodes focus on Ahsoka, detailing her birth and first experiences with the Force, her training at the Jedi Temple, and her eventual reclamation as a Rebellion hero. The other three delve further into the character of Dooku, beginning with him as a well-respected Jedi, wielding a blue curved lightsaber, who gradually falls further away from the light.

Helmed by supervising director Dave Filoni with stunning animation and an all-star cast, including Janina Gavankar as Ahsoka’s mother, Bryce Dallas Howard as Yaddle, and the returning talents of Liam Neeson as Qui-Gon Jinn and Ian McDiarmid as Palpatine, Tales of the Jedi is a vital, beautiful chapter in the saga, for fans of all ages. George Lucas’ Ex-Wife Gets Candid

George Lucas’ ex-wife Marcia Lucas – who served as an editor on the original trilogy of Star Wars – discussed which movie of the bunch was the “most problematic” and faced troubles in the editing room.

Star Wars has always been a franchise about family, more specifically the Skywalker family, but the production also has its own family story behind it. The franchise’s infamous creator George Lucas worked on the films with his now ex-wife Marcia Lucas, who served as editor on the project.

The two were married in 1969, eight years before A New Hope was released, but eventually divorced in 1983, the same year Return of the Jedi hit theaters. And although the Lucas couple closely collaborated on the entire original trilogy, Marcia has expressed plenty of distance to much of the Star Wars content since.

Not only did the Star Wars editor describe Disney’s sequel trilogy as “just terrible,” but she also revealed how she cried after first viewing The Phantom Menance out of dislike. However, it appears that wasn’t the start of her problems with the galaxy far, far away based on recent comments about Return of the Jedi…

Dressing The Galaxy: The Look Of Andor‘s Costumes

Here’s the latest from: StarWars.Com

Syril Karn’s pristine Pre-Mor uniform — complete with “pockets, piping, and some light tailoring” — is more than a hint at the character’s fussy nature and desire for the kind of order promised by the Empire. It’s also one of costume designer Michael Wilkinson’s favorite scenes in the series’ premiere episode, “Kassa.”

“I love that scene. Those two actors are so fantastic. And if I may say so, the costumes tell you quite a lot in that scene,” Wilkinson tells StarWars.com. “You have the precision and fastidiousness of Syril Karn’s uniform that he has personalized, customized, and made exactly how he wants it to be. And then his boss, on the other hand, is wearing a uniform that’s crumpled and dirty and has a couple of stains down the front of his shirt and a jacket he shrugs on that he’s had for 20 years.”

The two variations are among hundreds of costumes that Wilkinson and his team designed and fabricated for the actors on Andor, with all 12 episodes in Season 1 now streaming on Disney+. “I really enjoy playing with the language of clothes,” he says. “We wanted these things to be so rich with meaning and deserve repeated viewings that you could go deeper with it all. And, you know, it’s the only way that I really know how to work, to actually construct these backstories and worlds and civilizations so that everything has meaning. Otherwise, it’s fashion design, not costume design.”

Wilkinson recently sat down to talk about how his work helped telegraph Cassian Andor’s character evolution, the heartbreaking backstory of the costumes on Kenari, and the one item he kept from his time working on the production…

Tony Gilroy Breaks Down Andor Season 1

Here’s the latest from: StarWars.Com

Spoiler warning: This article contains story details and plot points from the entirety of Andor Season 1.

Andor isn’t like the Star Wars we’ve known. It announces this to us in its opening sequence, which finds Diego Luna’s Cassian Andor skulking forward in the rain, heading into a brothel, and minutes later, accidentally killing a local officer before deliberately dispatching a second. As far as inciting incidents go, this is a far cry from bickering droids escaping Darth Vader and his forces.

Which is all to say that Andor was a gamble. The Disney+ Original series doubled down on the grounded tone of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, taking the galaxy far, far away to a far more real-world, messier place than it’s ever been. But for Tony Gilroy, Rogue One co-writer and creator of the series, deviating from what Star Wars typically is never gave him a second thought.

“I don’t worry about that at all,” he tells StarWars.com. “I worry about the storytelling. I worry about the logic of it. I worry about the plotting. I worry about the characters. I worry about the story making sense and things tying together.”

It seems to have worked out for Gilroy, as Andor proved to resonate with both critics and fans. The series just wrapped up its memorable first season, of which Gilroy spoke with StarWars.com at length. The 12-episode season follows Cassian Andor five years before the events of Rogue One, as circumstances take him from drifting loner to Imperial prisoner to, finally, a believer in the burgeoning rebellion against the Empire. Throughout, there’s nary a mention of Jedi; thankfully, Lucasfilm and Disney were okay with that.

“I think everybody was kind of aware on their side that there was not only an opportunity, but a need for a new lane,” Gilroy says. “If there’s a billion beings in that galaxy, surely there’s a billion stories there, and they don’t all have to do with lightsabers and Jedi and Luke and Darth Vader. I mean, other people are living their lives, and there are incredible events that are happening.”…

The Stories Behind 5 Memorable Andor Props

Here’s the latest from: StarWars.Com

Right from the earliest discussions on what Andor would be, Martyn Doust knew he’d be busy. As prop master, Doust was in charge of realizing everything from blasters to drinkware for the Disney+ Original series. But Andor would be a unique challenge for Doust, who has worked on every Star Wars film in the Disney era. Under the guidance of showrunner Tony Gilroy, it was to be more grounded, more real, and it would go to more places. “We always knew we were going to be visiting lots of different, new worlds with Andor,” Doust tells StarWars.com. “And we knew that each world would have its own distinct look and feel and its own aesthetic. We really wanted to make sure that the props from that world looked like they lived in that world.” As Andor heads toward its season finale, Doust spoke with StarWars.com about how some of the series’ most important and memorable props came to be…..

Andor: S2 Will Be ‘Very Different’ From S1

Here’s the latest from: The Direct – Star Wars

According to the producer of Andor, the upcoming second season of the show is going to be quite different than what the world is watching now.

Much to the surprise of many, the Disney+ series following Cassian Andor from Rogue One has been phenomenal for many. In fact, lots of people have claimed it to be one of the best pieces of Star Wars storytelling ever.

Previously it has been revealed while the first twelve episodes of the show will cover the span of a year, the next batch, which begins filming soon, will explore the next four.

It’s that unique shift in storytelling structure which will help, at least in part, make the final half of the Andor series very different from the first….

Cable TV Release for Andor

Here’s the latest from: The Direct – Star Wars

Select episodes of Andor will be shown on cable television channels for Thanksgiving and ahead of the show’s season finale.

While Andor on Disney+ is both a prequel and spin-off to Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, the series led by Cassian Andor’s Diego Luna has been a Star Wars project like none other.

In addition to its unique formulaic structure, lightsabers and Skywalkers have been noticeably absent; and in their place, Star Wars’ most mature, complex, and intelligent content to date.

Despite being a critics’ darling, Andor has struggled in terms of viewership. But that all could change when the Star Wars series breaks the mold once more in a historic release beyond that of Disney+…

Lucasfilm Restricted Andor’s Sex & Violence

Here’s the latest from: The Direct – Star Wars

Andor has taken a deeper dive into mature content than previous Star Wars stories, though creator Tony Gilroy was restricted by Lucasfilm in exploring two concepts in-depth onscreen on Disney+.

The series made its intentions clear immediately when Cassian Andor visited a brothel in the opening sequence of the first episode. Intimate relationships between characters have been covered in ways more blunt than anything else Star Wars has ever done, like things getting steamy between Bix and Timm on Ferrix and their bedroom discussion the morning after.

Violence has been fairly on-brand for Star Wars, though Andor doesn’t shy away from taking out many of the good guys, too. Blood in large capacities is seen infrequently in the galaxy far, far away, mostly due to the weapons cauterizing wounds. Cassian and fellow rebels have killed their foes heartlessly, but gore has never been extreme.

For a longtime filmmaker like Gilroy, it was imperative that he have free reign to tell his story as he saw fit. Given the histories Disney and Lucasfilm have in media, the producer was uncertain if a partnership would last. Fortunately, he was afforded full creative freedom, with a request to dial it back on two key elements…

Losing Bix: Andor ’s Adria Arjona on Bix Caleen

Here’s the latest from: StarWars.Com

The office in Adria Arjona’s London apartment looked like it was being inhabited by an obsessive, her unwavering focus set on Bix Caleen. “I looked like a serial killer because I had notepads everywhere,” Arjona tells StarWars.com. “I just kept telling everyone, ‘I’m an actress. If you come in, don’t get scared.’ I’m just sort of plotting and connecting the dots that would take Bix to where she ends up.”

The crew behind Andor, now streaming on Disney+, was hard at work in production of the first season at Pinewood Studios at the time and Arjona and creator Tony Gilroy discussed Bix’s character arc at length. Now more than three quarters of the way through the season, viewers have witnessed the downward spiral taking Bix from self-made salvage dealer at the start to tortured captive being held against her will by the Empire. “Bix is bold and fearless, hardworking and incredibly loyal — sometimes to her own detriment,” Arjona explains. But her world begins to unravel swiftly….

What’s Next for Animated Ahsoka?

Here’s the latest from: The Direct – Star Wars

When Rosario Dawson was cast as Ahsoka in live-action, many fans thought that it might mean the end of the much beloved animated version of the character, who was voiced by Ashley Eckstein.

Thankfully, that wasn’t the case, as she returned to voice the character in three installments of the recently released Tales of the Jedi on Disney+. But where will she pop up next?

Chronologically, the next time Ahsoka is seen after her final episode of Tales is in Star Wars: Rebels, where she’s revealed to be the mysterious Rebel Fulcrum. However, after her final appearance there, the Star Wars timeline catches up to where the live-action content is now.

On the animated side, she could still end up in Star Wars: The Bad Batch at some point, which takes place shortly after Revenge of the Sith—a lot of that time remains unaccounted for. Or could it be an unannounced project? According to the actress, not even she knows…

It’s Not Just Farmboys That Whine

Here’s the latest from: The Direct – Star Wars

Wall-E director Andrew Stanton, who co-wrote the final two episodes of Disney+‘s Obi-Wan Kenobi, has had some challenges with the restrictions working on the Star Wars series regarding the canon storyline.

Lucasfilm and Disney’s series Obi-Wan Kenobi wrapped up its six-episode run some months ago. While it didn’t take the world by storm, it was still a very popular show in its own right.

Kenobi, of course, saw Ewan McGregor’s legendary Jedi Master take on Darth Vader in a high-stakes rematch. The entire season was driving toward the former friends’ fateful lightsaber clash on an unnamed planet.

Now, the Star Wars franchise’s sense of canon has always been somewhat free-flowing, but the live-action properties, at least, are seemingly made to follow a strict sense of continuity. And it seems that Andrew Stanton, who helped write Kenobi’s fifth and sixth chapters, took some issue with these limitations…

Bring Us “Pan Solo” and A Cookie

Here’s the latest from: StarWars.Com

The problem was Han Solo’s lips.

For three months, Hannalee Pervan and her mother, Catherine, had carefully planned out how to create a 6-foot-tall, 3-foot-wide sculpture of Solo encased in carbonite using the tools of their trade from One House Bakery in Benicia, California. After the bakery closed for the day, mother and daughter worked side by side for four weeks, baking three massive batches — 30 kilos each — of a special yeastless dough, rolling it into thin sheets reminiscent of fresh pasta, and then racing up the stairs from the bakery’s ovens to the loft where they would assemble their masterpiece.

The underlayer was forgiving, a rock-solid form with a high-protein flour and high sugar content to give the carbonite base its shape. Upon discovering she was the same height as Harrison Ford, Hannalee volunteered to lie down on the plywood base while her mother traced her with a Sharpie marker, approximating the placement of Han’s shoulders, his waist, his legs…

During the pandemic, Jacquelyn Smith found herself returning to two comforts, Star Wars books and baking, while taking care of her mother who passed away from cancer last year. “She was a voracious reader, and when she read I picked up reading novels again,” she tells StarWars.com. “My pre-order of Light of the Jedi arrived just a few days before she died, and although it was weeks before I could bring myself to read it, I found solace and comfort in the story and characters. Star Wars is ultimately about hope, and that’s just what I needed, what we all need in trying times.”

The idea came together while she was searching for Star Wars books online and found a set of dishes made for the 40th anniversary of Star Wars: A New Hope designed to look like those used on Lars Homestead. When her family inquired what she was planning to use those dishes for, Jacquelyn replied, “I am going to make blue food!” Starting with a classic blue milk drink, Jacquelyn soon discovered turning food blue was not always an easy process…

Heroes Of Their Own Journeys

Imperial stalwarts Dedra Meero and Syril Karn aren’t your typical minions of the Empire.

The Andor antagonists are fierce and nuanced, two characters that at once read as villains and regular people making dangerous decisions in the quest for power. And together, they could be a potent force to track down Cassian Andor and the burgeoning rebellion. But actors Denise Gough and Kyle Soller seem to be nothing like their characters. In a darkened room on the interview circuit, the two keep erupting into laughter as they try to describe their on-screen counterparts, now appearing in the series streaming on Disney+.
