If Five Hands — the game the Maya Pei Brigade plays to solve their internal disputes deep in the jungle — looks familiar, that’s because Sam Gilroy created it based on the playground staple Rock Paper Scissors.

The actor behind Gerdis this season and actor Benjamin Norris, who plays his rival Bardi, initially inspired their characters at a family dinner, his father and creator and executive producer Tony Gilroy tells StarWars.com.

“I went out for dinner with my family. It was a big, long dinner table and I was at the end of the table with my son and Ben Norris,” he recalls. “It was a big, rowdy, drunken dinner.” Their antics gave Gilroy an idea for the series, adding a bit of levity and allowing a new take on the burgeoning rebellion. “So I went back and I started writing Heckle and Jeckle in the woods.”

As the character grew, Sam Gilroy crafted the Star Wars spin on the hand game by not only introducing alternative gestures, but also adding several layers of complexity. In Five Hands, there are 15 animal gestures, including rancor, snork, and snoozbird, which are displayed by two players in three rounds overseen by a referee.

Andor Revisited: One Way Out

At the start of Andor’s third story arc, most of the main characters are approaching precarious turning points. The Empire is cracking down on citizens throughout the galaxy for the smallest infractions as their Imperial Security Bureau is determined to close in on the rebels responsible for the heist at Aldhani. In the “Narkina 5,” “Nobody’s Listening!,” and “One Way Out,” all directed by Toby Haynes, the production design and dialogue from writers Beau Willimon and Tony Gilroy take center stage as many characters are literally or figuratively trapped by the Empire.

Cassian, still using the pseudonym Keef Girgo, is shipped out to the Imperial prison Narkina 5. Notably, one of the first things the prisoners are required to do while in transit is remove their shoes. The prison is a sea of white hallways, bunks, and work rooms where inmates are required to quickly work together to build pieces of equipment for the Empire. Order is maintained by electric floors that send shocks through barefoot prisoner’s bodies if they break a rule or work too slowly. Andor soon settles into life in captivity, but always keeps an eye towards a possible escape….

Now 20 years after we first watched Luke’s father, Anakin Skywalker, become Darth Vader in Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith (2005), a long-awaited answer to one of the saga’s defining questions of how the Sith Lord came to be, Cassian’s journey raises a new question. Andor (2022-25) is not about how Cassian will meet his fate, but how he will become the man willing to make such a heroic sacrifice. As Luthen tells Cassian with poignant frankness, “I imagine your hate. I imagine that no matter what you tell me or you tell yourself, you’ll ultimately die fighting these bastards.”

No filmmakers’ work has had more of an impact on Star Wars creators than Akira Kurosawa. Whether you’re heading to Tokyo or following Star Wars Celebration Japan news from home, watching some of Kurosawa’s filmography that inspired George Lucas and countless other creators will give you a better appreciation for the galaxy far, far away.

Lucas first became aware of Kurosawa’s work while he was in film school at USC. In an interview with the Criterion Collection, he talked about the filmmaker’s impact. “It’s hard to really appreciate the true genius of Kurosawa until you’ve seen a few of the films and then you’ve been able to see other films at the same time and be able to realize his visual style,” said Lucas. “I think he comes from a generation of filmmakers that were still influenced by silent films. The visual graphics and the framing, just the quality of the images, go a long way to telling the story and setting the mood. You’re not going to find a lot of filmmakers that have the facile quality with the medium that Kurosawa had.”

Since its earliest iterations, the story of Star Wars: Skeleton Crew has been tied to another Lucasfilm pirate adventure: the Monkey Island games from LucasArts.

Series creators Jon Watts and Chris Ford count The Secret of Monkey Island from 1990 among their childhood inspirations for the story of Captain Silvo and his brigand crew, and among their own behind-the-scenes crew, Skywalker Sound’s Matt Wood and David W. Collins worked on the beloved gaming franchise. “Monkey Island was a huge thing for me as a kid,” Watts tells StarWars.com. “I loved Monkey Island, and still do, and so getting to do space pirates was something that allowed me to check back in.”

“During the press junket, Monkey Island came up a lot,” adds Ford, “and we talked about how much we loved the artwork from that era of LucasArts.” That gave the team an idea for promoting their series in a way that would bring their inspiration full circle. “I think it was Jon who actually thought ‘Hey, maybe we could ask someone at Lucasfilm if they actually know [Monkey Island cover artist] Steve Purcell and maybe he could do some art for Skeleton Crew?’” Ford recalls…

Bringing the Towering Tet’niss to Life

How Tippett Studio created the terrifying trash crab from the latest episode of the Disney+ series.

On the beaches of Lanupa, Wim and KB encounter a terrifying creature who may just see the lost children of At Attin as more food than friend. To create Star Wars: Skeleton Crew’s lumbering mother crab, a massive version of the seemingly harmless hermit crab-like creatures the pair followed skittering across the sands, series co-creators Jon Watts and Chris Ford called upon Tippett Studio to design, build, and animate the stop-motion puppet in their Berkeley, California studio.

The studio was founded by legendary animator and creature creator Phil Tippett, who led the innovative animation techniques for the tauntauns and AT-AT walkers of Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back and sculpted several of the aliens, including Max Rebo, populating Jabba’s Palace as the head of the creature department for Star Wars: Return of the Jedi. In recent years, the Tippett Studio has been called in to recreate Tippett’s stop-motion dejarik chess set from Star Wars: A New Hope for three recent Star Wars films — The Force Awakens, Solo: A Star Wars Story, and The Rise of Skywalker — and create new stop-motion masterpieces for The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett. For Skeleton Crew, the Mama Crab puppet, lovingly nicknamed Tet’niss, would become the studio’s heaviest creation to date….

Our opinion on Jod Na Nawood (Jude Law) is about as easy to pin down as the man himself (and it’s not just because he has more aliases than Ezra Bridger). One minute it seems like the gruff exterior is just a façade, the next he’s literally holding a dagger to a kid’s throat. But we suppose it’s a helpful lesson for Captain Fern (Ryan Kiera Armstrong) and her crew: it’s probably best to sleep with one eye open while Na Nawood is around.

Our crew has just learned that the bucket of bolts that carried them away from At Attin is none other than the storied Onyx Cinder, the vessel once owned by dread pirate Captain Tak Rennod. Jod is thrilled to discover they’re on the legendary pirate captain’s old ship, but the journey has started to take its toll on the rest of the group — especially Wim (Ravi Cabot-Conyers). He just wants to get home! SM-33 reveals he doesn’t remember At Attin’s location, but Captain Rennod kept a record of the coordinates at his secret lair beneath Skull Ridge Mountain and Fern orders him to take them there….

We weren’t even two weeks into 2024 when we got some of the biggest news of the year: The Mandalorian and Grogu are headed to the big screen! But while we wait to find out what the Clan of Two is up to next, there were plenty of exciting stories, bittersweet send-offs, and other announcements, anniversaries, and releases in the Star Wars galaxy. We said goodbye to Clone Force 99 in Star Wars: The Bad Batch and said hello to Kay Vess in Star Wars Outlaws. It was a year that brought not just one, but two(!!) new live-action series to Disney+. The LEGO Group put a fresh spin on the LEGO Star Wars galaxy with Darth Jar Jar and we celebrated the debut of the original Gungan 25 years ago in Star Wars: The Phantom Menace. Always two there are, right? And the Empire loomed over New York City for one unforgettable evening. As we count down to the end of 2024, here are our favorite Star Wars reveals, releases, and moments that made us excited to be a part of the galaxy far, far away….

They say it takes a village to raise a child. When it comes to Neel of At Attin, that old adage couldn’t be more accurate. It took the latest technology, a veteran special effects squad, an entire team of incredible performers, and one very dedicated young actor. But would you have ever guessed that the timeless proverb applies to droids as well?

Star Wars: Skeleton Crew, which recently debuted on Disney+, introduces a slew of brand-new characters who have already earned legions of fans. (Neel Nation, we see you.) “For Skeleton Crew there were more characters than we’ve built on any other season before,” says Legacy Effects co-founder J. Alan Scott, whose company fabricated Grogu for The Mandalorian and brought Professor Huyang and Murley the Loth-cat to life for Ahsoka among others. For the latest series, Legacy Effects once again made a mix of never-before-seen creatures and droids crafted by Doug Chiang and his production design team, like Neel and the unforgettable Kh’ymm, as well as more familiar aliens first glimpsed in other much-loved Star Wars stories. …

We’ve loved Neel (Robert Timothy Smith) from the first moment we laid eyes on that carefully combed blue hair and his adorable snout. But this week our adoration was cemented by his kindness and bravery in the face of life-threatening dangers.

Using the coordinates from Kh’ymm’s observatory, our crew travels to a planet that looks much like At Attin, but reveals itself to be a far different kind of place. Neel, KB (Kyriana Kratter), Fern (Ryan Kiera Armstrong), and Wim (Ravi Cabot-Conyers) quickly realize that though many things about this planet look familiar, the world of At Achrann is in a constant state of war. The air is filled with ashy smoke, so thick Jod can taste it when he steps outside. Buildings are bombed-out shells with trees growing through them, evidence of a conflict that’s been raging for a very long time. The kids leave Jod (Jude Law) with the ship and go in search of directions. They soon meet Hayna, a capable young warrior from the Troik clan and the daughter of its leader, General Strix….

The very idea of Star Wars: Skeleton Crew — an adventure told from the perspective of four young travelers seeing the wider world for the first time — invites the design of new worlds in rich color palettes, transfixing the characters and fans at home with all the splendor and danger the galaxy far, far away has to offer.

Behind the scenes, co-production designers Doug Chiang and Oliver Scholl tackled the job with more than half a century of filmmaking experience between them. “One of the joys of working with Oli is that it’s a terrific collaboration, because he brings a very distinct perspective to it,” says Chiang, Lucasfilm’s Senior Vice President and Executive Design Director. “I love those kinds of collaborations because we get fresh ideas. He may suggest something that I hadn’t thought of before, and it’s a terrific way of world building. It feels more authentic, and I think that’s one of the things that’s so important for Star Wars, is that we want this to feel authentic.” …
