Drawing Jedi Younglings

Ever wanted to draw Star Wars characters and vehicles just like the professional comic book artists? In this step-by-step series, Star Wars artists and illustrators show you how to draw some of the most beloved characters in the saga.

Star Wars illustrator Katie Cook explains with these easy-to-follow steps how to draw the cute Jedi younglings — Nautolan boy Zinn Toa, Gungan girl Roo-Roo Page and Rodian boy Wee Dunn — from the “Children of the Force” episode in Season 2 of The Clone Wars.

Steps 1-4 are drawn lightly with pencil. No pen, no dark lines. Finished lines and details will come at the end.

Step One:
Start by lightly drawing your basic shapes.

Step Two:
Lightly begin to rough in some more of the bodies and head shapes.

Step Three:
Now that you have the basic forms roughed in, you can start adding more detail like facial features and hands.

Step Four:
Start adding your final details on the face and clothes. Your pencils are done!

Step Five:
You can use any pen or marker that you’re comfortable with. I use Pigma Micron Pens, but any good black pen or marker will work great! When your ink is dry (and make sure it is!) you can erase all your pencil lines and you’ll be left with nice, clean black lines.

Step Six:
Color, color, color! You can use markers, crayons, colored pencils or even your computer! This drawing was colored using colored pencils.

How the ILM Model Shop Brought Ahsoka’s T-6 Jedi Shuttle to Life

Here’s the latest from: StarWars.Com

Industrial Light & Magic model maker John Goodson gives us a closer look at the complexities at work in the tiny craft fabricated for Ahsoka’s Jedi shuttle on Ahsoka.

There was something strikingly familiar about Ahsoka Tano’s Jedi shuttle, the T-6 1974. “I already know this ship,” model maker John Goodson thought as he set to work building the craft that would transport Tano and Professor Huyang on their first live-action adventure in Ahsoka, now on Disney+.

However, the physical creation of Tano’s shuttle was its own journey, bringing the unique mode of transportation first created for the Jedi of the prequels and Star Wars: The Clone Wars back to the screen with a painstakingly crafted and intricately mechanized model….

Dawn of the Jedi Continues to Sound Promising

Even though Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny wasn’t everything I was personally hoping it would be, I still think James Mangold is an incredibly talented filmmaker. I have been listening to his interviews and going through his previous movies, and they got me thinking about what we might see in his film about the Dawn of the Jedi!

Editorial: The New Jedi Order | Potential Locations for Rey Skywalker’s Jedi Academy

While the future of big-screen Star Wars storytelling is still largely wrapped up in mystery, we were treated to some concrete details about one of the movies during the last Star Wars Celebration. Directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, we will have a story set 15 years after the end of the Skywalker Saga, in a new era known as the New Jedi Order. This story will tell the rise of a new group of Jedi who have to face a challenging galaxy while being taught the ways of the Force by Jedi Master Rey Skywalker.

In the second of two articles (you can check out the first one here), I will speculate on where Rey might choose to train her Jedi candidates. With a whole galaxy of planets to choose from, the list is virtually endless, and there’s a good possibility the location will be somewhere entirely new, but I’ve tried to narrow the list down to locations that I believe have a good reason to be chosen as a starting ground for her Jedi Padawans…

Editorial: The New Jedi Order | Potential Candidates for Rey Skywalker’s Jedi Academy

At the last Star Wars Celebration, it was announced that Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy will be directing a new film set in an era dubbed the New Jedi Order, set 15 years after the events of The Rise of Skywalker. This film will see a new generation of Jedi rise up to face new challenges under the tutelage of Jedi Master Rey Skywalker. Little is known about this film, but we can perhaps make a guess at who might share the screen with Rey and where the film might take place. That is what I intend to do, starting with a breakdown of potential Jedi trainees in this first article.

It’s most likely that these Jedi will be fresh faces as we follow the path of a new young group of heroes venturing out into the galaxy. But there’s a possibility that one or two familiar faces may pop up to learn the ways of the Force under Rey’s tutelage. In this article I will speculate on which canon Force-sensitive characters could fit into the timeline of this film.

I’ve restricted my list to candidates of the academy, so I will be ruling out established Jedi Knights such as Cal Kestis and Ahsoka Tano, as I believe they would be Masters in their own right, assuming they are still around at this point in the timeline. With that said, let’s dive in!…

Jedi at 40 | Into the Rancor Pit

Here’s the latest from: StarWars.Com

By Kristin Baver

The longtime friends and colleagues, who worked for Industrial Light & Magic on the film, discuss collaborating on the rancor sequence and beyond.

Star Wars: Return of the Jedi arrived in theaters on May 25, 1983, bringing an end to the original trilogy in memorable fashion. Marking its 40th anniversary, StarWars.com presents “Jedi at 40,” a series of articles celebrating the film that brought us Jabba’s palace, Ewoks, Luke Skywalker’s final confrontation with the Emperor and Darth Vader, and so much more.

The rancor looms large for a creature whose appearance on screen in Star Wars: Return of the Jedi lasts for a mere three minutes. In a scene that brings suspense, terror, and action into the dimly lit dungeon beneath Jabba the Hutt’s dais, the ravenous beast lumbers into view, crunching through a Gamorrean guard before turning its formidable and fearsome visage toward Luke Skywalker.

Roaring fully into camera with a snarling maw of jagged teeth, the rancor reaches its grimy talons toward Luke and the audience, ready for its next meal. Then with not a second to lose, Skywalker desperately grabs a skull and lobs it at the control panel that sends the door crashing down upon the beast, ending the heart-pumping battle. Jabba is outraged. The rancor keeper is in tears. And Luke Skywalker lives to fight another day.

To celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Return of the Jedi’s debut, recently StarWars.com sat down separately with Dennis Muren and Phil Tippett, one of the VFX supervisors on the film and the head of the monster shop, respectively, to talk about their collaboration on the rancor pit, their enduring friendship, and the legacy of Star Wars…

Jedi at 40 | ILM Legend Thomas G. Smith

Here’s the latest from: StarWars.Com

By Dan Brooks

General manager of ILM in the early to mid-‘80s, Smith reflects on the rancor, working with George Lucas, and the fate of a memorable Easter egg.

It may be hard to believe, but some good actually came from the Empire’s second Death Star.

For Star Wars: Return of the Jedi, Industrial Light & Magic had built a huge model of the new technological terror’s surface — “two times larger than a tennis court,” legendary ILM general manager Thomas G. Smith tells StarWars.com — and it was too large to be stored after filming. On the orders of George Lucas himself, who usually saved and preserved every model from the Star Wars films, it was to be trashed. So, Smith and some other ILMers took the model apart, rented some trucks, and drove the pieces to a nearby garbage dump. But someone actually wanted to save the Death Star.

“My son was working at summer employment there, and he saw all these pieces going into the dump and he thought, ‘No, no, no,’” Smith says. “‘Some of that stuff looks good!’” Smith’s son saved a box of pieces for himself and held onto it for years — ultimately putting it to ironically good use…
